Master the Art of Layering
Austin’s fall weather can swing dramatically. A day that starts in the high 80s can easily drop into the 60s after sunset. The key is wearing lightweight, breathable base layers (like a cotton or synthetic top) and bringing something warmer for the evening.
A flannel shirt, pashmina, or a light jacket that can be tied around your waist or easily stashed in a bag is perfect. This strategy keeps you comfortable in the afternoon heat without leaving you shivering during the headlining act.
Choose Your Footwear Wisely
You’ll be walking and standing for hours, so comfort is non-negotiable. But weather adds another layer of complexity. If the forecast is dry, stick with supportive, broken-in sneakers. However, if there’s even a slight chance of rain, prepare for mud. Zilker Park can get notoriously messy after a downpour. In that case, waterproof boots or an old pair of shoes you don't mind sacrificing are your best bet. Never wear new shoes, and avoid open-toed sandals, which offer no protection from mud or crowds.
Pack the Right Bag (and Know the Rules)
ACL has a strict bag policy that you need to check before you go. Typically, small clutches and fanny packs (usually 6" x 9" or smaller) don't need to be clear. Any larger bags must be clear and within the festival's size limits (often 12" x 6" x 12"). A hydration pack is a great option, as they are usually allowed, don't have to be clear, and can be refilled for free inside the park. Whatever you choose, make sure it has room for your essentials without forcing you to carry too much.
Prepare for Sun and Heat
Even if clouds are in the forecast, the Texas sun is powerful. Highs in the 80s are common, and it can feel even hotter in a crowd. Sunscreen is an absolute must, but it has to be non-aerosol and in a container of 3.4 ounces or less to get past security. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are also essential. Staying hydrated is critical, so bring an empty reusable water bottle to use at the free filling stations. Many seasoned festival-goers also recommend bringing factory-sealed electrolyte packets to add to your water.
Plan for a Potential Downpour
While ACL is a rain-or-shine event, a sudden storm can dampen your spirits if you're not ready. Umbrellas are prohibited because they block views, so a lightweight, foldable poncho is your best friend. It can be easily tucked into a pocket or bag. Consider bringing a large Ziploc or small garbage bag to protect your phone and other electronics if the skies open up. If it rains, the ground will get muddy, so having a plan for your footwear is crucial.
Don’t Forget the Dust
By the second or third day of a dry weekend, Zilker Park can get incredibly dusty from all the foot traffic. A simple bandana is a veteran move. You can wear it around your neck and pull it up over your nose and mouth when the dust kicks up. It can also be used for sun protection or to wipe away sweat, making it a versatile and invaluable accessory for a long festival day.
