What is the story about?

Every year, the Camp Flog Gnaw lineup drops like a cultural weather report, telling us where the cutting edge of music is headed. But its relationship with R&B is more than a trend; it's a core part of its DNA, thanks to foundational artists.

From Backyard Carnival to Cultural Force

Before it was a two-day spectacle at Dodger Stadium, Camp Flog Gnaw was an extension of Tyler, the Creator’s chaotic and creative universe. It began as the OFWGKTA Carnival in 2012, a physical manifestation of the Odd Future collective's punk-rap energy

and DIY ethos. In its early days, the festival was an insider's gathering, built around Tyler's immediate creative circle. But as Tyler's own musical tastes evolved from aggressive rap to lush, jazz-and-soul-inflected soundscapes, so did the festival. It became less a showcase for a single collective and more a curated playlist from one of music's most eclectic tastemakers, a place where genre boundaries are actively ignored.

The Alternative R&B Blueprint

The spirit of the headline points to a crucial moment in the festival's history: the integration of alternative R&B. While SZA is not on the 2026 bill, her past appearance in 2017 was a landmark booking that helped solidify the festival's credentials as a home for a new kind of R&B. At the time, her album 'Ctrl' had redefined the genre with its raw vulnerability and diaristic songwriting. Her presence, alongside fellow Odd Future-adjacent R&B pioneers like Frank Ocean, The Internet, and Steve Lacy, proved that Flog Gnaw's 'alternative' spirit wasn't just about rap or rock; it was about an emotional honesty and sonic adventurousness that this new wave of R&B artists embodied perfectly. They weren't just guests; they were a core part of the aesthetic.

R&B as a Pillar of the 2026 Lineup

Looking at the 2026 lineup, the legacy of artists like SZA is undeniable. R&B is not a side dish; it's a main course. Steve Lacy, an artist who grew up in the Odd Future ecosystem and is now a bona fide star, holds a top spot. He represents the full-circle journey of this sound from niche to headliner. He’s joined by Syd, whose band The Internet was a fixture of past Flogs, and Don Toliver, who blurs the lines between trap and melodic R&B. Add in soulful artists like Leon Thomas and Thee Sacred Souls, and the picture becomes clear: the festival's identity is now intrinsically tied to the diverse sounds of modern R&B and soul. It’s a direct evolution from the groundwork laid in previous years.

A Shared Ethos of Authenticity

Ultimately, what makes R&B so integral to Camp Flog Gnaw isn't just the sound, but the ethos. SZA built her career on radical honesty and a willingness to defy categorization—sentiments Tyler, the Creator has championed his entire career. Her music, which blends pop, rock, and lo-fi elements, pushed R&B beyond its traditional boundaries. This genre-fluidity is the festival's calling card. Tyler isn't booking 'R&B artists'; he's booking authentic artists who resonate with a generation that values vulnerability over polish. The R&B presented at Flog Gnaw—from SZA in the past to Steve Lacy today—is introspective, experimental, and deeply personal, making it a perfect fit for a festival that has always celebrated being yourself, quirks and all.
