A Technicolor Revolt Against Grunge
To understand the fashion of Clueless, you have to remember what it was reacting against. In the mid-1990s, the dominant youth style was grunge. Inspired by bands like Nirvana, the look was defined by baggy pants, dark colors, and oversized plaid flannel
shirts. When director Amy Heckerling and costume designer Mona May scouted Los Angeles high schools, that’s all they saw. Heckerling, however, had a different vision. She wanted to create a bright, aspirational, and slightly artificial world—a “fake version of Europe” set in sunny California. The fashion was central to that goal. It wasn't just about clothes; it was about building a colorful, feminine, and optimistic counter-narrative to the prevailing somber mood of the era.
The Mastermind with a Global Vision
Enter Mona May. Having grown up in Europe and studied fashion in Paris, she was uniquely qualified to bring Heckerling's vision to life. Heckerling hired May specifically for her European sensibility and love of color. May's task was to translate high fashion for a high school setting, a challenge she met by mixing designer pieces with vintage finds and mall-bought clothes. Working with a modest budget of around $200,000 for all the costumes, May had to be incredibly resourceful. She dove into Collezioni magazines to see what was happening on the runways in Milan and Paris, picking out silhouettes and trends that could be adapted for 16-year-olds. The result was a high-low mix that felt both aspirational and somewhat attainable.
From European Runways to Bronson Alcott High
The most significant “hidden” influence was the direct pull from European runways. While the movie name-drops Alaïa and Calvin Klein, the inspiration ran much deeper. Karl Lagerfeld's 1994 collection for Chanel, with its brightly colored plaid, short skirts, and big hats, was a clear reference point. Cher’s iconic yellow plaid suit wasn’t Dolce & Gabbana, as long rumored, but a Jean Paul Gaultier design from his Fall 1994 collection. Even before that, designer Anna Sui's 1991 runway show featured a plaid suit worn by Naomi Campbell that was an undeniable precursor to Cher’s signature look. May’s genius was in taking these high-concept designer looks—styles that Cher and Dionne would plausibly see on trips to Europe—and making them work for a high school hallway.
The Secret Nod to Jane Austen
Beyond contemporary fashion, there was another, more subtle influence at play: the Regency era. Since Clueless is a modern adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Emma, May subtly wove in silhouettes from the period. Cher’s outfits often feature empire waists and cap sleeves, which echo the style of the early 19th century. These historical nods gave the characters' wardrobes a timeless, classic structure beneath the '90s trends. For example, the over-the-knee socks that became a signature part of Cher's look were a direct request from Heckerling, who loved the style from the 1920s, another era that borrowed from historical fashion. This blend of modern and historical gave the costumes a unique depth that has helped them endure.
A Legacy of Deliberate Style
The fashion in Clueless feels timeless not by accident, but by design. May intentionally avoided overly trendy '90s pieces that would quickly date the film, instead focusing on classic silhouettes like A-line skirts, peacoats, and tailored suits. The goal was to create outfits that were feminine, pretty, and powerful, telling a story about each character's journey. Tai’s transformation, for instance, is told through her clothes, moving from baggy grunge to a “mini-me” Cher phase before finding her own style. This narrative-driven approach to costume is why the film's influence is still seen today, from runway collections by Versace to the wardrobe in films like Barbie.
