The core philosophy behind Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) is treating the guest experience like a film. John Murdy, the longtime creative director for the Hollywood event, has often described his work as creating "living horror movies." In this cinematic
approach, you, the guest, are not just an observer; you are the camera. Your line of sight is the frame, and your movement through the maze is the edit. The designers are the directors, using the physical environment to control what you see and when you see it. They don't have the luxury of a cutting room, so they build the cuts into the architecture itself. The goal is to create immersive experiences that put you directly inside the world of a film or a nightmare. This requires a different kind of storytelling, one dictated by footsteps and sightlines.
Forcing the Edit With Architecture
So how do you edit with hallways and plywood? It's about manipulating pace and focus. A long, narrow corridor naturally speeds people up, creating a sense of urgency. A wider, more detailed room invites you to slow down and absorb the atmosphere, setting a scene before the inevitable scare. This is narrative pacing in physical form. Corners are the most powerful tool. A sharp, blind turn is the equivalent of a cinematic jump cut. You have no information about what’s next, creating a moment of pure vulnerability. Designers expertly play these angles. A scare actor won't come at you head-on where you can see them from a distance; they'll emerge from your peripheral vision, right at the turning point, maximizing the surprise. This technique is a fundamental principle of haunted attraction design: shorten the sightlines to control the reveal.
The Three-Act Structure of a Scare
Effective scares are rarely a single, isolated event. They are a miniature story with a beginning, middle, and end. Designers often use what’s known as an A-B-C structure. Scene A is the setup; it establishes an idea or draws your attention to a specific prop or character. Scene B is the misdirection; your focus is pulled toward a secondary element, making you believe the threat is coming from there. Scene C is the payoff: the real scare comes from an unexpected direction, exploiting your diverted attention. For example, you might enter a room and see a monstrous figure slumped in a chair (A). As you creep past, a loud noise erupts from the far corner of the room (B). When you instinctively turn toward the sound, the monster in the chair lunges at you (C). Your physical movement from point A to B to C completes the narrative arc of that specific scare.
Telling Stories With Light and Sound
The editing process isn't limited to the physical layout. Light and sound are crucial co-directors. A sudden spotlight tells you exactly where to look, acting as a visual cue that's as clear as a director yelling "action!" A sudden plunge into darkness effectively cuts the scene, leaving your imagination to fill in the terrifying blanks. Sound design works in much the same way. A persistent, unnerving soundscape builds suspense, while a sudden, loud audio sting serves the same function as a scare chord in a horror film. In houses like 'Depths of Fear' from a past event, a constant, blaring alarm and a countdown clock created an overwhelming sense of dread and a forward-moving narrative all on their own. These elements work together to guide your attention, manipulate your emotions, and ensure the story unfolds exactly as the designers intended, one terrified step at a time.
