The solution often involves a specialized motion-capture (or "mo-cap") actor. These performers, like the legendary Andy Serkis who brought Gollum and Caesar to life, wear a suit covered in sensors that records their every movement, which is then mapped onto a digital character. The mo-cap actor is on set, performing the scenes live with the other actors, providing a real, reactive presence. For instance, when James Spader played Ultron in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," he was physically on set in a mo-cap suit, allowing the other actors to have a real performance to play against, even if they had to look at a rig of red lights above his head to match the towering robot's final height. Ultimately, the burden falls on the actor's imagination. Acting opposite a digital character is a profound test of skill, requiring performers to generate authentic emotion while staring into a void or at a green screen. They must visualize the digital character completely—its size, its expression, its energy—and react as if it were truly there.
