1. Embrace of the Serpent (2015)
If the elemental power and breathtaking black-and-white visuals of Cissé's 'Yeelen' resonated with you, Ciro Guerra’s Colombian masterpiece is an essential next step. The film follows two parallel journeys, decades apart, as two Western scientists travel
the Amazon guided by the same shaman, Karamakate. It’s a hypnotic, devastating look at colonialism’s spiritual cost, blending historical journals with a powerful, dreamlike quality. Like Cissé, Guerra is deeply concerned with how knowledge is passed down or lost forever, and the film’s rich, monochrome cinematography gives the jungle a mythic, almost otherworldly texture that feels both ancient and urgent.
2. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010)
Cissé often blurs the line between the physical and spiritual worlds, treating magic as an everyday reality. Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul takes that idea and creates a cinematic universe entirely of its own. This Palme d'Or winner follows a dying man visited by the ghost of his dead wife and the spirit of his long-lost son, who has returned as a red-eyed 'monkey ghost'. It’s a film that is serene, surreal, and deeply moving, exploring reincarnation, memory, and nature with a gentle, meditative pace that Cissé fans will recognize and appreciate. It asks you to simply exist within its world, where the mundane and the magical are one and the same.
3. Black Girl (1966)
To appreciate Cissé, one must appreciate his contemporary and the 'father of African cinema', Ousmane Sembène. While Cissé’s work often has a more mythical bent, Sembène’s debut feature is a foundational piece of political filmmaking that shares a sharp critique of post-colonial realities. The film follows a young Senegalese woman named Diouana who moves to France to work for a white couple, only to find her dreams of a cosmopolitan life crushed by exploitation and isolation. It's a stark, efficient, and heartbreaking film that powerfully explores themes of identity, labor, and the psychological chains of colonialism.
4. Munyurangabo (2007)
Shot in just 11 days in Rwanda, Lee Isaac Chung’s debut feature is a quiet, powerful story of friendship and the lingering trauma of the 1994 genocide. Two young men, one Hutu and one Tutsi, journey from Kigali to their home village, a trip that tests their bond. The film’s patient, observational style and use of non-professional actors create a profound sense of authenticity. Like Cissé, Chung finds epic emotional resonance in the landscape and the simple, unspoken moments between characters. It’s a film that proves you don’t need a big budget to tell a story with immense heart and political weight, focusing on reconciliation with a rare compassion.
5. Touki Bouki (1973)
While Cissé’s films often feel like ancient fables, Djibril Diop Mambéty’s 'Touki Bouki' is a punk-rock poem. This landmark of Senegalese cinema follows two lovers who dream of escaping Dakar for a fantasy life in Paris. Mambéty employs a frenetic, jump-cutting style influenced by the French New Wave, but its core themes—the tension between tradition and modernity, the allure and danger of the West—are pure post-colonial African cinema. It is a vibrant, chaotic, and unforgettable counterpoint to Cissé's more measured pace, but it comes from the same well of creative resistance and desire for a new African cinematic language.
6. The Tree of Wooden Clogs (1978)
At first glance, an Italian film about late 19th-century peasant life may seem like an odd pairing, but Ermanno Olmi's masterpiece shares a deep spiritual kinship with Cissé's work. This Palme d'Or winner uses local farmers as actors to depict the daily rhythms, struggles, and small joys of four families living on a single estate. The film moves with the pace of the seasons, honoring the dignity of labor, faith, and community with a painterly, neorealist approach. Much like Cissé's focus on tradition and community, Olmi creates a deeply humanist epic out of the fabric of everyday life, making for a patient and profoundly moving experience.
7. Atlantics (2019)
A more recent film that feels spiritually connected to Cissé's legacy is Mati Diop’s haunting debut. Part social-realist drama, part ghost story, 'Atlantics' focuses on a group of young women in Dakar after their boyfriends, unpaid construction workers, disappear at sea while trying to reach Spain. The film brilliantly blends a timely story about economic migration with supernatural elements, as the spirits of the lost boys return to haunt the community. Diop, like Cissé, uses magical realism not as an escape, but as a way to explore grief, injustice, and the lingering presence of those who are gone.
