Before diving in, you have to know what makes a Saura film a Saura film. He was a master of using potent symbols to slip critiques of Spain's Franco-era dictatorship past the censors. His movies are marked by a few key obsessions: the haunting trauma
of the Spanish Civil War, the expressive power of dance (especially flamenco), and a complete disregard for the line between memory, dream, and reality. In both films, the art isn't just a backdrop; it's a consuming force that bleeds into the performers' lives. Saura’s film watches as a choreographer’s passion for his lead dancer and the opera he's staging merge into a destructive obsession. Similarly, Black Swan uses ballet to externalize Nina Sayers' psychological breakdown. 2. Pan's Labyrinth: The Political Ghost
Guillermo del Toro’s dark fairy tale shares a deep spiritual connection with Saura's allegorical critiques of fascism. Saura’s 1976 film, Cría Cuervos ("Raise Ravens"), uses a young girl's morbid fantasies to process the death of her authoritarian father, a stand-in for General Franco himself. Del Toro does something remarkably similar, using the fantasy world of Ofelia as both an escape from and a reflection of the brutal reality of fascist Spain in 1944. Both films use the innocence and imagination of a child not for sentimentality, but as a powerful lens to view the horrors of a repressive political state and the ghosts it leaves behind.
3. The Father: The Unreliable Memory
No director played with the fragmentation of memory quite like Saura, and Florian Zeller's The Father feels like a direct descendant of this obsession. Saura’s films often refuse to tell you what’s past, what’s present, and what’s imagined. The Father takes this concept and builds an entire cinematic language around it, placing the audience directly inside the disorienting mind of a man with dementia. We experience the shifting timelines, the changing faces, and the crumbling sense of reality just as Anthony does. It’s a terrifying and empathetic use of a narrative device Saura pioneered, forcing viewers to question the very fabric of the story being told.
4. Birdman: Blurring Performance and Reality
Saura loved to explore the space where the stage ends and life begins, often setting his films during rehearsals where personal dramas become part of the art. Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is a feature-length exploration of this very idea. The film follows a washed-up actor trying to mount a serious Broadway play, all while being haunted by his superhero alter ego. The backstage drama, the existential crises, the meta-commentary on art versus commerce—it all feels like a supercharged version of a Saura setup. 5. The Florida Project: The Child's-Eye View
At first glance, Sean Baker’s sun-drenched story of American poverty seems worlds away from Saura's Spain. But at its heart, The Florida Project uses the same powerful device as Saura’s Cría Cuervos: telling a story of adult desperation through the eyes of a child. The camera is often placed at six-year-old Moonee’s height, making the adult world feel distant and distorted. She and her friends are largely oblivious to the poverty and danger surrounding them, finding magic in a run-down motel on the outskirts of Disney World. This creates a heartbreaking dissonance for the audience, a technique Saura perfected, where childhood innocence serves to highlight the bleakness of the adult reality it cannot yet comprehend.
