It’s a Festival for Film Lovers, Not Just Film Students
Let’s get one thing straight: the BFI London Film Festival is fundamentally a public event. Unlike more industry-focused affairs, this is one of the world's major festivals where regular people can buy tickets to almost the entire program. For its 70th
edition in 2026, the festival is showcasing 251 films from 88 countries, a staggering collection designed to offer something for everyone. The program is even broken down into helpful thematic strands like 'Love', 'Laugh', 'Thrill', and 'Cult', letting you choose a movie based on your mood, not on a director's theoretical leanings. It's less like a final exam and more like the world's greatest video store, curated just for you.
From Star-Studded Galas to Hidden Gems
Sure, there are high-profile Gala screenings with big stars. This year includes the opening film 'Elsinore' starring Andrew Scott and the closing comedy 'The Debut' from director Jesse Eisenberg, starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. But for every major premiere, there are dozens of smaller, quirkier, and more intimate films you’d likely never discover otherwise. The 2026 lineup features everything from gripping Lebanese heist thrillers and political documentaries to experimental cinema and heartfelt dramas. The joy of LFF isn't just seeing the big names; it's stumbling into a small screening room and watching a film from a first-time director that completely blows you away. It’s a treasure hunt where everyone finds their own prize.
The Experience Is the Main Event
A film festival is about more than just what happens on screen. It's about the buzz of the crowd, the shared gasps and laughs in a dark theater, and the chance to hear directly from the creators. Q&A sessions are incredibly common, even for smaller films, giving you a chance to hear a director's passion project explained in their own words. The festival also hosts a huge slate of 'LFF for Free' events, including panel discussions, workshops, and even DJ nights inspired by the films. It transforms a passive viewing into an active, communal experience. You’re not just watching a movie; you're part of a city-wide celebration of storytelling.
Your Gut Reaction Is a Good Enough 'Critique'
You don't need to know the first thing about the 'auteur theory' or 'diegetic sound' to know if a movie made you feel something. Did it make you cry? Did it make you hold your breath? Did you leave the theater debating the ending with your friend? That's it. That's the whole point. Festivals like this are a powerful reminder that film is, at its core, an emotional medium. In fact, the festival is deeply committed to accessibility, offering 'Relaxed Screenings' for neurodivergent audiences, extensive subtitling and audio description options, and even a dedicated accessible viewing area for the red carpet. It's a clear signal that the event is designed to be welcoming to all, encouraging you to simply come as you are and connect with the stories on your own terms.
