For decades, the blockbuster formula has been a reliable machine for delivering satisfaction. From Luke Skywalker blowing up the Death Star to the Avengers defeating Thanos, a conventional victory provides a powerful, uncomplicated catharsis. The good guys vanquish the bad guys, the immediate threat is neutralized, and order is restored. The hero’s journey concludes with a reward, both tangible and moral. They’ve not only won the battle but have also proven themselves worthy. It’s a narrative structure that offers comfort and clarity in a complicated world. We cheer, we feel good, and we leave the theater certain of who to root for. This is victory as we’ve been taught to recognize it: a definitive, feel-good conclusion.

Enter Paul Atreides' Terrible Purpose

Then came Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two,” a film that culminates in one of the most successful and yet deeply unsettling victories in recent memory. On the surface, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) achieves a perfect revenge plot. He avenges his father, reclaims his family’s honor, defeats his mortal enemies, and ascends to the Imperial throne. He wins the knife fight, gets the girl (or so it seems), and seizes control of the galaxy’s most valuable resource. By every metric of the classic blockbuster, Paul wins. He completes his hero’s journey. But the film’s final moments are not triumphant; they are terrifying.

A Victory That Is a Profound Defeat

The genius of the film's climax is in how it portrays this victory as a catastrophic failure. To win, Paul must fully embrace the role of a messiah, a manufactured prophecy he once resisted. He consciously manipulates the religious fanaticism of the Fremen people, turning them into a weapon for his ambition. The film makes it clear this is a monstrous act; as he tells his mother, the way they win is by being Harkonnens themselves—by becoming the monsters. His strategic marriage proposal to Princess Irulan is a cold political calculation that shatters the heart of Chani (Zendaya), the woman he loves and who represents his moral conscience. The final shot is not of a triumphant emperor, but of Chani, betrayed and furious, leaving him behind. Paul gets the universe but loses his soul and the only person who saw him as he truly was.

A Warning, Not a Wish-Fulfillment

This subversion was the entire point of Frank Herbert’s original novel. Herbert wrote “Dune” as a warning against charismatic leaders and the human tendency to surrender critical thought to a messianic figure. He famously said that charismatic leaders should come with a warning label: “May be dangerous to your health.” The story was never meant to be a simple power fantasy.
