For decades, sequins have been the go-to material for adding glamour and glitz to fashion. But beneath that dazzling surface lies a significant environmental problem. The vast majority of conventional sequins are made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or PET
(polyethylene terephthalate), which are petroleum-based plastics. Their production involves toxic chemicals, and because they are not biodegradable, they persist in the environment for hundreds of years. Every time a sequined garment is worn or washed, it can shed these tiny discs, which are a form of microplastic. These particles find their way into our oceans, where they are often mistaken for food by marine life, causing harm and entering the food chain. In the UK alone, an estimated 33 million sequined garments are purchased during the holiday season, with many ending up in landfills after only a few wears, contributing to a massive pollution problem.
Copenhagen's Sustainable Mandate
Copenhagen Fashion Week has emerged as a global leader in sustainable fashion. It’s not just a platform for showcasing new styles; it’s an active force for change. Since January 2023, brands wishing to be on the official schedule must meet a rigorous set of 18 minimum sustainability standards. These requirements, which are regularly updated, push designers to innovate across their entire supply chain, from using sustainable fabrics to reducing waste and ensuring ethical production. This framework has created a unique ecosystem where sustainability isn't just a buzzword but a prerequisite for participation. It's within this forward-thinking environment that the move away from traditional embellishments has gained serious momentum, positioning Danish designers at the forefront of the quest for eco-friendly sparkle. Brands like Ganni have become known for using materials like recycled polyester for their sequined pieces.
From Wood Pulp to Algae
The alternatives to plastic sequins are a testament to material science and creativity. One of the most promising developments is sequins made from plant-derived cellulose. Innovators like Radiant Matter have created what they call "BioSequin™," which is biodegradable, non-toxic, and made from renewable wood pulp. These sequins achieve their shimmer through structural color—mimicking the way butterfly wings or beetle shells reflect light—eliminating the need for synthetic pigments or metals. Stella McCartney has already featured these plant-based sequins in her collections. Other designers are exploring an even wider range of materials. German designer Carolyn Raff has developed sequins from algae, while others are working with everything from recycled plastics to food waste. These new materials aren't just a substitute; they offer a new, often more subtle and organic, aesthetic.
The Future of Embellishment
The shift away from plastic sequins is about more than just a single material; it signals a broader change in how the fashion industry approaches embellishment. Instead of disposable glamour, designers are focusing on mindful decoration that adds value without adding to a landfill. The new bio-sequins are lightweight, compostable, and can be created in a vast array of colors and finishes, sometimes using bacteria to produce vibrant, non-toxic dyes. This innovation challenges the notion that sustainable fashion must be minimalist or drab. As brands like Rotate and Nicklas Skovgaard experiment with biodegradable sequins on the Copenhagen runways, they prove that high-impact looks can have a low environmental impact. While these materials are not yet mainstream, their growing presence on the catwalk is a clear sign that the future of fashion is set to be just as dazzling, but far more responsible.
