The golden age of streaming is also the golden age of scrolling. With a tidal wave of new shows and movies every month, how do you find the good stuff? Here’s a guide to how Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video surface their October premieres.
Netflix: The All-Powerful Algorithm
Netflix’s strategy
is built on a foundation of powerful, personalized recommendations. The homepage is your primary discovery engine, with rows like 'Trending Now' and 'New Releases' tailored to your viewing habits. But for a direct look at what’s fresh, your first stop should be the 'New & Popular' tab. This section is a chronological and curated firehose of content, showing daily top 10 lists, what’s new this week, and, crucially, what’s 'Coming This Week'. Here, you can set reminders for upcoming titles, like the thriller series 'Below' or the fourth season of the hit political drama 'The Diplomat', ensuring you get a notification the moment they drop. This month, the platform is also highlighting its new adaptation of John Steinbeck's 'East of Eden' starring Florence Pugh. For horror fans, Netflix is stocking up for Halloween with a deep library of scary movies, using curated rows on the homepage to spotlight spooky season classics and new additions alike.
Disney+: Curation by Universe
While Disney+ also uses algorithms, its core discovery tool is brand-driven curation. The interface is famously organized into hubs for its biggest properties: Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, National Geographic, and Disney. When a major premiere is scheduled, it becomes the centerpiece of its respective hub. For October, all eyes are on the new Marvel series 'VisionQuest', which continues the story of the synthezoid Avenger. Expect to see it heavily promoted not just on the main homepage carousel but also at the top of the Marvel section. Beyond the blockbusters, Disney+ features a 'New to Disney+' row that captures everything else. For Halloween, the platform leans into curated collections, grouping together family-friendly spooky movies like 'Coven Academy' with more intense offerings for older audiences. This makes it easy to find a mood-appropriate film, whether you’re looking for a lighthearted special or a genuine scare.
Prime Video: The Everything Store of Streaming
Amazon’s Prime Video can sometimes feel like a sprawling digital marketplace, mixing content included with Prime, titles for rent or purchase, and add-on channel subscriptions. The key is knowing how to filter the noise. The 'Free to me' toggle is your best friend, instantly hiding anything that requires an extra fee. The homepage typically features a large banner for its biggest monthly premiere. In October, expect to see major promotion for the new Stephen King adaptation 'Carrie' and the second season of the action-packed 'The Terminal List'. Prime Video also has dedicated 'New & Notable' and 'Recently Added Movies/TV' rows, which offer a straightforward, non-personalized look at the latest arrivals. Because Amazon's library is so vast, its genre pages are surprisingly useful. Clicking into the 'Horror' or 'Thriller' categories will surface both new originals like 'Kill Jackie' and a massive back catalog of licensed films added for the Halloween season.
