The primary reason your favorite spooky special is missing comes down to a deceptively simple concept: ownership. But in television, ownership is a complex web. When a show was made decades ago, the contracts rarely, if ever, considered a future where
something called "streaming" would exist. The original agreements covered broadcast television and maybe home video (like VHS or DVD). Streaming is a completely different category of rights that must be negotiated and paid for separately. This means a studio might own the show, but a specific streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, or Peacock has to pay for a license to show it. These licenses can be exclusive, meaning only one platform can have the show, creating bidding wars for popular content.
The Million-Dollar Music Problem
Even if a streamer secures the rights to the show itself, another massive hurdle remains: the music. Many older shows used popular songs of the era to create iconic moments. However, the licenses for those songs were often for broadcast only and for a limited time. To put that show on a streaming service today requires renegotiating with every single music rights holder. This can be incredibly expensive, sometimes prohibitively so. The deal, which extends to 2030, shows how valuable these iconic specials are as platforms fight to lock down exclusive content that draws in entire families.
