The Blair Witch Project (1999)

The Others (2001)
Atmosphere is everything in this gothic ghost story starring Nicole Kidman. For most of the film, the monster is an invisible force—the demon King Paimon—whose influence is felt through increasingly disturbing and tragic events. While the demon has roots in 17th-century texts, the film wisely keeps it in the shadows, allowing the horror to manifest through the family's psychological collapse. We see strange symbols, hear an unsettling tongue click, and witness characters behaving erratically, but the entity itself remains an unseen manipulator. Grief is the initial monster, but by the time the film reaches its horrifying climax, it's clear a far more ancient and methodical evil has been pulling the strings all along.
