Before the slasher boom of the 1980s, gore was often implied rather than shown. But in the 1970s, a new generation of artists began pushing boundaries. The true turning point was 1973's The Exorcist. Makeup artist Dick Smith, often called the "Godfather
of Makeup," was tasked with making the demonic possession of a young girl feel terrifyingly real. He engineered the infamous spinning head with a mechanical dummy and developed bladder systems hidden under foam latex to create bleeding effects and projectile vomit on cue. Smith's work, which earned him legendary status, demonstrated that makeup and practical effects weren't just for creating monsters but for inflicting realistic, gut-wrenching trauma on screen, setting the stage for a new era of horror.
The Golden Age of Grue
The late '70s and '80s became the undisputed golden age of practical gore, and a new class of artists became rock stars in their own right. Tom Savini, a Vietnam combat photographer, used his firsthand knowledge to create shockingly realistic kills in George A. Romero’s zombie epics and the Friday the 13th series. Fans didn't just remember the movies; they remembered Savini's specific, gruesome gags. Meanwhile, artists like Rick Baker and Rob Bottin elevated creature effects to an art form. Baker’s Oscar-winning transformation scene in An American Werewolf in London (1981) was so groundbreaking it prompted the Academy to create a permanent Best Makeup category. A year later, Bottin's work on John Carpenter’s The Thing delivered some of the most grotesquely creative and physically believable monsters in cinema history.

Practical effects have weight, texture, and physical presence on set. A new generation of horror filmmakers, raised on the gory classics of the '80s, actively champion practical effects. Films like The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016), The Void (2016), and the notoriously graphic Terrifier series have been celebrated for their commitment to old-school, physical gore. These modern movies prove that while CGI can create grand spectacle, nothing beats the stomach-churning intimacy of a well-executed practical effect. It remains a beloved tool for filmmakers who want their horror to feel raw, grounded, and truly disturbing.
