The core challenge is something called dynamic range: a camera's ability to capture detail in both the brightest highlights and the darkest shadows of a single shot. A real candle inside a pumpkin is intensely bright compared to the ambient light of a night
scene. If a cinematographer exposes for the actor's face, the jack-o'-lantern's carved features blow out into a featureless, white-hot mess. But if they expose for the flickering flame, the actor beside it is plunged into an inky silhouette. Your own smartphone camera demonstrates this when you try to photograph a friend in front of a bright window. Either the window is perfectly clear and your friend is a shadow, or you can see your friend and the window is a wall of pure white light. Modern cinema cameras have a much wider dynamic range than our phones, but the principle is the same. That perfect, cinematic balance requires a little movie magic.
The Practical Effects Toolkit
For decades, the solution was purely practical, relying on clever tricks right there on set. Instead of a real candle, special effects teams would often use a controllable electric bulb. Cinematographers could dial the brightness down with a dimmer to the exact level needed—just enough to suggest a glow without overwhelming the camera's sensor. These bulbs were often connected to a flicker generator to mimic the unsteady dance of a real flame. In many cases, the most effective technique was to have a brighter, off-camera light doing the heavy lifting. A crew member would hold a gelled orange light just out of frame, aimed at the actor's face, simulating the glow of the pumpkin. This allows the pumpkin itself to be lit with a much dimmer, more camera-friendly source, while the actor gets the warm, spooky illumination the scene requires. It’s a classic sleight-of-hand that gives the audience the feeling of the jack-o'-lantern's light without the technical headache.
A Hybrid Approach in the Digital Age
Today, filmmakers have the best of both worlds, blending practical effects with digital enhancements. A scene might still start with a practical, on-set jack-o'-lantern lit with a low-wattage bulb to give the actors a real light source to interact with. This provides authentic, interactive light on nearby surfaces and gives performers something tangible to react to, which often results in a more believable performance. Then, in post-production, visual effects (VFX) artists can step in. They might digitally enhance the glow, add more prominent flickers, or even replace the light source entirely with a more dynamic, computer-generated one. This hybrid approach offers maximum control. The director gets the authentic, on-set interaction from practical effects, and the VFX team gets to fine-tune the final image to perfection, ensuring the jack-o'-lantern is eerie and atmospheric without compromising the rest of the shot.
The Artistry Behind the Glow
Ultimately, lighting a jack-o'-lantern is about more than just managing exposure; it's about storytelling. In the opening scene of John Carpenter's classic Halloween (1978), cinematographer Dean Cundey used the pumpkin's glow as one of several light sources to create a layered, atmospheric image that immediately sets a foreboding tone. The quality of the light matters. Is it a soft, welcoming glow inviting trick-or-treaters? Or is it a harsh, sinister flicker that signals impending danger? Directors and cinematographers make these choices deliberately. By combining different color temperatures—the cool blue of moonlight against the warm orange of the pumpkin—they create visual contrast that adds depth and mood to a scene. The humble jack-o'-lantern becomes a powerful tool for building suspense and telling the audience how to feel, all with a simple, well-controlled glow.
