A Darker, Shakespearean Twist
In an early storyboarded version of the film's ending, the fight between uncle and nephew concludes very differently. Scar, in a moment of deceptive victory, actually succeeds in throwing Simba off the edge
of Pride Rock. Believing his rival is dead, Scar lets out a maniacal laugh of triumph. This original concept was far more aligned with the grim tragedies of Hamlet, the Shakespearean play that loosely inspired the film's plot. In some versions of the storyboards, Scar even whispers the famous Hamlet line, "Good night, sweet prince," before tossing Simba from the cliff, hammering home the bleakness of the moment.
A Pyrrhic Victory and a Fiery Demise
While Simba survives the fall by landing on a tree branch below, out of Scar's sight, the villain gets no time to enjoy his supposed kingship. In his moment of victorious delusion, the flames engulfing Pride Rock creep up behind him. Consumed by his own hubris, Scar is burned alive, laughing all the way to his fiery end. This ending presented a major problem for the filmmakers: it gave Scar the win, even if only for a moment, and left audiences with a profoundly dark and disturbing image. It was ultimately decided that this vision was too horrific and tonally jarring for a family film, prompting a complete rethink of the final sequence.
The Circle of Life, Not Betrayal
The creative team, including directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, and producer Don Hahn, went back to the drawing board. The final version provides a more thematically satisfying conclusion. Instead of being outmaneuvered, Simba cleverly turns Scar’s own tactics against him. He backs Scar to the edge and, mirroring his uncle's earlier command, tells him to "Run. Run away and never return." This moment is crucial, as it shows Simba has risen above the desire for simple revenge, choosing exile over murder and proving he is a worthy king. It completes his character arc, transforming him from a guilt-ridden runaway into a responsible leader who embodies the wisdom of his father, Mufasa.
A Fitting End from the Hyenas
The final piece of the puzzle was deciding Scar’s ultimate fate. Rather than having him perish alone in the fire, the writers crafted a more poetic and ironic end. After Simba spares him, Scar makes a final, desperate attempt to attack, but Simba sends him tumbling over the cliff. He survives the fall, only to be met at the bottom by his once-loyal hyena allies. Moments before, they had overheard Scar attempting to betray them and blame them for everything. Feeling used and discarded, the hyenas surround their former leader and, as the camera pans away, enact their own form of justice. This ending not only provided a less graphically explicit death but also delivered a powerful message: those who rule by fear and betrayal will ultimately be consumed by it.
