First Off, What is Panem?
Think of Panem as a dystopian future version of North America. It consists of a wealthy, decadent, and technologically advanced Capitol that rules over twelve surrounding districts. Each district is responsible for a specific industry—like coal mining
in District 12 or agriculture in District 11—and exists to serve the Capitol. The relationship is not a happy one. Decades before the events of the original 'Hunger Games' trilogy, the districts rose up against the Capitol in a failed rebellion known as the 'Dark Days'. The brutal annual event known as the Hunger Games was established as a punishment and a constant reminder of the Capitol's absolute power.
So, What Are the Hunger Games?
At their core, the Hunger Games are a televised fight to the death. Every year, each of the twelve districts must offer up two 'tributes'—one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18—chosen in a lottery called the 'Reaping'. These 24 tributes are then sent to an elaborate, outdoor 'arena' where they must fight until only one survivor remains. The entire spectacle is broadcast live across Panem as mandatory viewing, serving as both horrific entertainment for Capitol citizens and a tool of fear to keep the districts in line. The lone survivor is crowned the 'Victor', showered with wealth, and becomes a celebrity, but is forever haunted by what they did to survive.
Who is Haymitch Abernathy?
Haymitch is the central character of 'Sunrise on the Reaping'. For those who only know the original series, he's the grumpy, often drunk mentor to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the 74th and 75th Hunger Games. As District 12's only living victor prior to them, his job is to advise new tributes. His cynicism and trauma are products of his own time in the arena. 'Sunrise on the Reaping' tells his origin story, showing him as a 16-year-old tribute from the poorest part of District 12, known as the Seam. The book explores how he survived his own games and what made him the broken but brilliant strategist we meet decades later.
Crucially, What is a 'Quarter Quell'?
This is the most important concept for the new book. Every 25 years, the Capitol marks the anniversary of the districts' failed rebellion with a special version of the Hunger Games called a Quarter Quell. These are designed to be even more spectacular and terrifying than the usual games, featuring a unique, cruel twist. 'Sunrise on the Reaping' focuses on the 50th Hunger Games, which was the Second Quarter Quell. The twist for this particular Quell was that the districts had to send double the number of tributes—two boys and two girls from each district instead of one. This meant Haymitch Abernathy was reaped to compete against 47 other tributes, not the usual 23.
Just a Few Key Terms
A few other words will pop up. 'Tributes' are the kids chosen to fight in the games. 'The Reaping' is the lottery ceremony where they are selected. 'Sponsors' are wealthy Capitol citizens who can send gifts like food or medicine to tributes inside the arena to help them survive. 'Gamemakers' are the officials who design and control the arena, able to introduce weather changes, create mutant creatures called 'muttations', and manipulate the environment to force tributes together. Finally, a 'Victor' is a winner of the Games, who returns home to a special neighborhood called the 'Victors'' Village'.
