For cosplayers with sewing skills, the most elegant solution is often the one no one can see. Adding hidden pockets into the side seams of a skirt, tunic, or pair of trousers is a game-changer. If your
costume has any sort of flowing fabric or a logical side seam, you can insert a simple pocket pouch made of thin, sturdy fabric. There are countless tutorials online that show how to draft a simple pocket pattern and stitch it into an existing seam, making it virtually invisible. For historical cosplays, you can even create separate, tie-on pockets worn under a skirt or gown, accessed through a hidden slit in the side—a historically accurate and practical touch.
The Character-Appropriate Carry-All
Sometimes the best solution is hiding in plain sight. Does your character carry a bag, a satchel, or a backpack? Use it! A well-chosen, in-universe bag not only adds to the authenticity of your cosplay but also provides ample storage. Think Link’s satchel, a Hogwarts student’s book bag, or a post-apocalyptic survivor’s rugged rucksack. You can even decorate a simple drawstring bag or backpack to match your character's aesthetic. This approach keeps your hands free and your modern-day essentials safely stowed while enhancing your overall look. Just be prepared to set it down for certain photo ops.
The Prop with a Purpose
What if your character’s most iconic accessory could double as your wallet? Many props can be built with secret compartments. A hollowed-out book for a studious mage, a shield with a hidden phone pouch on the back, or a large gauntlet with just enough space for a credit card and ID can be brilliant solutions. This requires some creative engineering during the build process, using materials like EVA foam to construct hidden hatches or pockets. One popular trick is to build a secret compartment into a chest plate or piece of shoulder armor, easily accessible to you but completely hidden from an admirer’s view.
The Undercover Option
When the costume is too sleek for seams or props, it’s time to go undercover. A running belt, which is a slim, stretchy fabric band worn around the waist, can be a cosplayer's best friend. These can be easily hidden under a tunic, cape, or armor piece. They’re designed to hold a phone, keys, and cards securely against your body without adding bulk. For another discreet option, consider wrist wallets or pouches that can be concealed under a gauntlet or a long sleeve. Some cosplayers even utilize the space inside a sturdy boot to stash flat items like cards or cash.
The 'Handler' Hero
For the most elaborate, form-fitting, or restrictive costumes, the most practical solution might not be on your person at all. Enter the "handler": a trusted friend, family member, or con buddy who isn't in a complex costume and can serve as your walking backpack. This person can carry a bag with not only your phone and wallet but also a water bottle, snacks, and an emergency repair kit. While it requires coordination, having a designated handler frees you up to fully embody your character without worrying about losing your keys or fumbling for your phone. It’s a team effort that ensures you can navigate the convention floor with ease.
