Perhaps the most infamous modern example is the disposable coffee cup that appeared in a 2019 episode of Game of Thrones. During a celebratory feast at Winterfell, a very 21st-century-looking cup sat on the table in front of Daenerys Targaryen. The internet
erupted, with memes spreading faster than dragonfire. Though many initially blamed Starbucks, the cup was later identified as being from a local Belfast coffee shop frequented by the cast. HBO later digitally removed the cup, but the gaffe became a symbol of the final season's rushed feel for many viewers. It’s a perfect case of a tiny object breaking the carefully constructed fantasy, proving that even in a world with ice zombies, a stray latte is a bridge too far for eagle-eyed fans.
The Time-Traveling Car
Period pieces are a minefield for anachronisms, and Mel Gibson’s 1995 epic Braveheart famously fell victim. During a sweeping battle sequence, as Scottish warriors prepare to face down a cavalry charge, a white car can be spotted parked in the background. It’s a fleeting moment, but once you see it, you can’t unsee it. In an era meant to be the late 13th century, the appearance of a modern automobile is hilariously out of place. Similar errors, like a crew member in jeans visible during a chaotic forest battle in Gladiator, show just how difficult it is to keep the modern world from bleeding into historical fiction, especially with hundreds of extras and a sprawling outdoor set.
The Magical Changing Breakfast
Sometimes the error happens right in front of the camera, from one cut to the next. In the 1990 classic Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts’ character Vivian is having breakfast with Edward, played by Richard Gere. In one shot, she is happily eating a croissant. The camera cuts to Edward and then back to Vivian, who is now mid-bite into a pancake. According to director Garry Marshall, he simply preferred Roberts’ performance in the later takes, which involved the pancake, and decided to keep it. The result is a breakfast that magically transforms, a detail that has become one of the most beloved and frequently cited continuity errors in film history.
The Premature Bullet Holes
Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction is a film built on intricate details, which makes its most famous continuity error all the more fascinating. In the memorable "divine intervention" scene, Jules and Vincent survive a barrage of bullets from a man who emerges from a bathroom. However, sharp-eyed viewers noticed that the bullet holes are already visible in the wall behind Jules before any shots are fired. This has led to endless fan debate: was it a simple production mistake, or a deliberate choice by Tarantino to subtly signal the impending "miracle"? While it's most likely a standard filming goof, the ambiguity has allowed the error to become part of the film's mythology, with some fans arguing it adds to the movie's themes of fate and chance.
The Accidental Prop Reveal
Action sequences and stunts often require hidden mechanics to work, but sometimes they aren't hidden well enough. During the thrilling Battle of Carthage reenactment in Gladiator, a chariot flips over, and for a split second, a modern gas canister is visible in the back of the wreckage. This tank was almost certainly used to power the stunt, but its brief appearance completely shatters the illusion of ancient Rome. An even earlier, and perhaps more charming, example comes from Star Wars: A New Hope. As a group of Stormtroopers enters a control room, one of them audibly bonks his head on the rising doorframe. The actor, who later claimed he had an upset stomach and was distracted, thought the take would be cut, but it made it into the film and became a legendary blooper.
