The Master Strategist
Armed with a park map, a color-coded spreadsheet, and an almost unsettling knowledge of crowd-flow patterns, the Strategist is the group's general. They’ve already determined the optimal house order to minimize wait times, identified the best Stay and Scream
holding area, and have a contingency plan for when a popular house hits a 90-minute wait. Their messages are full of acronyms like “S&S” and directives like, “We hit the back of the park first and work our way forward.” You may not understand their methods, but without them, you’d probably only see three houses and spend the rest of the night in line for a pretzel.
The Hype Machine
This person lives and breathes the HHN rumor mill. Their primary function is to flood the chat with links to fan forums, blurry construction photos, and speculative YouTube videos. Every text from them begins with “OMG, did you guys see…?” followed by a theory about a secret unannounced house or a detailed analysis of a recently posted menu. Their intel is a mixed bag of genuine leaks and wild fan fiction, but their infectious excitement is the fuel that keeps the group’s energy high through the long months of waiting. They’re the first to buy merch and the last to stop talking about it.
The Express Pass Agitator
No topic will spark a more ferocious debate in the HHN group chat than the Express Pass. And at the center of this firestorm is the Agitator. They come in two forms: the advocate who insists the event is “literally impossible” without spending the extra money, and the purist who believes that “waiting is part of the experience” and refuses to pay. Both sides will present passionate, evidence-based arguments, filling the chat with screenshots of wait times from previous years and complex budget breakdowns. The debate will rage for days, threatening to tear the group apart before you even step foot in the park.
The Food & Drink Coordinator
While the Strategist is planning the scare route, this person is planning the snack route. For them, the haunted houses are just the opening act for the main event: themed culinary delights. Their questions aren't about which house is scariest, but about the precise location of the Pizza Fries or whether the Twisted Tater is worth the line. They will meticulously study the food and beverage blog posts and create a must-eat list that is as detailed as the Strategist's house plan. They are the reason your group will stay hydrated and fed, ensuring no one gets hangry in the middle of a two-hour queue.
The Cautiously Optimistic Scaredy-Cat
They swear up and down they love Halloween and are “so excited” to go. Yet, with every house reveal, a nervous text appears: “Oof, clowns? I don’t know about that one,” or “Is that one, like, super gory?” On the night of the event, they become a human shield, gripping the backpack of the person in front of them with a death grip. They’ll walk through every house with their eyes shut, only to exclaim at the exit, “Okay, that wasn’t so bad!” You admire their bravery for even showing up, but you know you’ll be their designated protector all night.
The Scare Zone Analyst
This person is a connoisseur of carnage, a critic of creeps. They don't just experience the scare zones; they review them in real-time. After narrowly escaping a chainsaw-wielding maniac, their first instinct is to text the group, “Good energy in this zone, but the actor timing near the fountain is a little predictable.” They appreciate the artistry of a well-executed jump scare and the atmospheric detail of the fog and lighting. They have strong opinions on which original characters should be brought back and will often compare this year’s offerings to a perceived golden age of HHN in the past.
The Ghost
The Ghost’s journey in the group chat is short and sweet. They appear on day one, respond to the initial “Who’s in for HHN this year?” with a resounding “ME!” and then promptly vanish. For weeks, they will leave every planning message, every heated Express Pass debate, and every hype-filled rumor on “read.” Just as the group is about to finalize the headcount without them, they will reappear, 24 hours before the event, with the four most terrifying words imaginable: “So, what’s the plan?”
