More Than a Stroll: A Legacy in Motion
To understand the coordinated looks dominating the streets of New Orleans during the festival, you have to understand the Divine Nine. This is the nickname for the nine historically Black Greek Letter
Organizations (BGLOs) that form the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Founded primarily at Howard University in the early 20th century, these organizations were created to provide Black students with a network of support, service, and community that was denied to them in other parts of segregated American life. That legacy is the foundation of the pride on display. When members of these sororities arrive at ESSENCE Fest, they are not just attending a music festival; they are participating in a cultural reunion where their shared history is celebrated and made visible through carefully curated style.
Pretty in Pink & Green: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) are instantly recognizable in their signature colors of salmon pink and apple green. Founded in 1908 at Howard University, they are the first Black Greek-letter sorority. At ESSENCE Fest, their style is often defined by a preppy, polished aesthetic. Think pink and green sundresses, chic jumpsuits, and elegant accessories. Pearls are a must, symbolizing their founders. You'll see the ivy leaf, another key symbol, incorporated into jewelry, prints, and custom jackets. The look is timeless and sophisticated, reflecting a legacy of service and sisterhood that spans over a century.
Crimson and Cream Confidence: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Bold, confident, and always making a statement—that is the style of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Their crimson and cream colors command attention throughout New Orleans. Founded in 1913, also at Howard University, the Deltas have a history of social activism, famously participating in the Women's Suffrage March just months after their founding. This boldness is reflected in their fashion. You'll spot elephants, their unofficial mascot, on everything from tote bags to statement necklaces. Outfits often feature sharp, tailored pieces in vibrant red, balanced with cream or white. It's a look of power and presence, embodying the organization's commitment to scholarship, service, and social action.
A Finer Reign in Royal Blue & White: Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
The women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. bring a distinct elegance to the festival in their colors of royal blue and pure white. Founded in 1920 at Howard, Zetas are constitutionally bound to their brother fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma. Their style often exudes a regal and 'finer' sensibility, a nod to their unofficial motto of being 'Finer Women.' Look for crisp white dresses accented with royal blue accessories, or flowing blue gowns that make a statement in the New Orleans heat. Doves are a key symbol, often appearing in their jewelry. Their presence is a reminder of their principles: Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood.
Golden Standard Style: Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Representing in royal blue and gold, the members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. stand out with a style that is both chic and community-focused. Founded in 1922 at Butler University by seven school teachers, they are the only Divine Nine sorority not founded at Howard. Their outfits often feature rich gold tones paired with deep blues, reflecting their commitment to 'Greater Service, Greater Progress.' The poodle is their official mascot, and you may see it playfully incorporated into their accessories. Their fashion at ESSENCE Fest is a mix of sophisticated and approachable looks, from breezy gold maxi dresses to custom denim jackets emblazoned with their Greek letters.
