The most ruthless editor in Hollywood isn't a person; it's the clock. A 400-page novel contains dozens of hours of reading material, but a standard feature film has about 120 minutes to tell its story. Something has to give. The first things on the chopping
block are almost always subplots and secondary characters. While these elements add richness and depth to a novel, they can bog down a film's pacing. A screenwriter's primary job is to identify the absolute core of the story—the main character's central journey—and prune away anything that doesn't directly serve it. That meandering side quest or the protagonist's quirky cousin might be fan favorites, but if they don't advance the main plot, they're likely to get the axe to keep the narrative lean and focused.
You Can't Film an Internal Monologue
Novels have a superpower that films lack: direct access to a character's innermost thoughts. A book can spend pages exploring a character's anxieties, memories, and motivations. A movie can't just pause for a ten-minute voiceover without grinding to a halt. This forces screenwriters to perform a kind of creative alchemy, translating internal feelings into external actions. A paragraph describing a character's guilt might become a scene where they nervously wash their hands. A chapter on their secret ambition might be condensed into a single, longing look at a photograph. This is one of the biggest challenges; screenwriters must invent new scenes or dialogue to show what the book simply told the reader, a process that requires changing the source material to preserve its spirit.
Combining Characters for Clarity
A sprawling epic novel might have a cast of hundreds, each with a distinct role. On screen, that many faces can become a confusing blur for the audience. To streamline the narrative, screenwriters often create composite characters. This involves merging two or three figures from the book into a single role in the film. For instance, a wise old mentor, a helpful shopkeeper, and a friendly guard might all be combined into one character who provides guidance and aid at key moments. This not only reduces the number of actors needed but also strengthens the new character's impact on the story, making them more memorable and their relationship with the protagonist clearer. It's not about disrespecting the original characters, but about making the story work for a more condensed, visual medium.
Taming the 'Unfilmable' and the Budget
Some elements of a book are simply 'unfilmable,' or at least prohibitively difficult or expensive to bring to the screen. This can range from abstract magical concepts to fantastical creatures that would exhaust a special effects budget. In J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," the character of Tom Bombadil—a whimsical, all-powerful forest dweller who is immune to the Ring's power—was famously cut from Peter Jackson's film adaptation. Why? Because his presence, while charming in the book, stops the plot cold and raises narrative questions that the film doesn't have time to answer. Screenwriters must weigh whether a scene or character justifies the immense cost and effort required to realize it visually, or if the story functions just as well—or better—without it.
Finding a New Thematic Focus
A successful adaptation doesn't just copy the book; it interprets it. Sometimes, a screenwriter and director will decide to emphasize a different theme than the one that was most prominent in the novel. This can lead to the most controversial changes, such as altering a story's ending or a character's ultimate fate. They might change the plot to create a more cinematically satisfying arc or to make a statement that resonates with a contemporary audience. The goal isn't to 'fix' the book, but to create a companion piece that stands on its own artistic merits while honoring the core of what made the original story so compelling in the first place.
