Affectionately nicknamed “Okudagrams” after their creator, this visual language is the single most consistent design element in modern Star Trek, unifying the look and feel of Starfleet technology from one series to the next. It’s the detail you’ve seen a million times but may have never truly registered.
The Man Who Designed the Future
The mind behind this iconic look is Michael Okuda, a graphic designer who joined the Star Trek production team in the mid-1980s, starting with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. When developing Star Trek: The Next Generation, creator Gene Roddenberry wanted a bridge that felt more advanced than the switch-and-dial-heavy design of the original series. The solution needed to look futuristic and be cost-effective. Okuda’s genius was in creating an interface that implied incredible complexity and functionality without needing expensive, working electronics. He designed a system of backlit panels made from large photographic transparencies, which gave the impression of a sophisticated, software-driven touchscreen decades before the iPad made such technology commonplace. The actors were simply told that the controls reconfigured themselves for personalized use, selling the illusion of a dynamic, intelligent system.
More Than Just Pretty Lights
Here’s the secret: Okudagrams aren’t just gibberish. While not a functioning operating system on set, Okuda designed them with an internal logic. The layout, color-coding, and shapes all have a purpose within the fictional world. Its clean, flat, and colorful aesthetic predicted many of the design trends that would come to dominate real-world user interfaces in the 21st century, from mobile operating systems to vehicle dashboards.
