A Legacy of Smart Acquisitions
To understand Extreme Networks' portfolio, you have to look at its shopping history. Over the past decade, the company has aggressively acquired other firms to expand its capabilities. Key purchases include Enterasys in 2013, Avaya's networking business
in 2017, Brocade's data center assets the same year, and Aerohive Networks in 2019. Each of these companies was a significant player in its own right, bringing a loyal customer base, talented engineers, and, crucially, its own distinct product lines and technologies. While this strategy rapidly scaled Extreme into a major enterprise networking provider, it also planted the seeds of complexity. Integrating disparate product families is a monumental task, and the ghosts of these acquired companies still linger within the current lineup, creating a patchwork of solutions that don't always feel like they were designed by the same team.
The Operating System Puzzle
One of the biggest hurdles for engineers is the sheer number of network operating systems (OS) under the Extreme banner. An engineer working on an original Extreme switch uses ExtremeXOS (EXOS), which has its own command-line interface (CLI) and logic. But if they move to a switch from the Avaya acquisition, they'll be working with VOSS (now called Fabric Engine), which is completely different. Then there's the SLX-OS, inherited from the Brocade acquisition, which is built on a Linux foundation and designed for data center routing. According to some user reviews, there can be four or five different OSes and command syntaxes to learn depending on the hardware deployed. While Extreme has made strides with "Universal Hardware" that can run either EXOS or VOSS, the reality for many organizations with mixed-generation gear is that engineers must be fluent in multiple, distinct network languages to manage their own environment.
Which Management Platform Is It?
The complexity extends to network management software. For years, the on-premise solution was Extreme Management Center (XMC), a powerful but traditional tool. The acquisition of Aerohive brought in HiveManager, a well-regarded cloud-native platform that became the foundation for ExtremeCloud IQ (XIQ). Today, XIQ is Extreme's strategic future, a unified cloud platform designed to manage everything. However, the transition creates confusion. To bridge the gap, XMC was rebranded as ExtremeCloud IQ Site Engine, an on-premise tool that can connect to the cloud. This has led to engineers and IT managers scratching their heads over product names that sound confusingly similar—is it the cloud platform or the on-premise one with "cloud" in the name? For organizations not ready to go all-in on cloud management, navigating this hybrid world adds another layer of complexity to their daily operations.
Navigating the Fabric Maze
Nowhere is the portfolio overlap more apparent than in advanced networking technologies like fabric. Extreme inherited the powerful and respected Fabric Connect technology from Avaya. It's an enhanced implementation of Shortest Path Bridging (SPB) that simplifies network configuration and is considered by some to be best-in-class for campus networks. However, Extreme also has fabric solutions inherited from Brocade (based on VXLAN for data centers) and its own internal developments. While the company is working to unify these under a single branding umbrella, the underlying technologies are different. This means an engineer looking to implement a fabric solution must first decipher which fabric technology is appropriate for their specific hardware and use case, a challenge that requires deep product knowledge and can be a significant barrier to adoption.
