To understand the gravity of Linus Torvalds’s decision, you have to picture the technology landscape of the early 1990s. The world ran on proprietary software. Giants like Microsoft and Apple operated like fortresses, with their source code—the very blueprint
of their operating systems—kept under lock and key. This was the undisputed model for success: build something valuable, protect it fiercely, and sell it for a profit. The idea of simply giving away the core of your work was not just naive; it was commercial suicide. In this environment, a young Torvalds, studying computer science at the University of Helsinki, began tinkering. Frustrated with the limitations of MINIX, an educational operating system, he started writing his own kernel—the central component of an OS—just for fun. In a now-famous Usenet post in August 1991, he announced his project with extreme modesty, calling it "just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu."
The Hobby That Became a Choice
As Torvalds’s kernel, initially named “Freax” before an administrator dubbed it “Linux,” began to take shape, it attracted interest from other programmers online. Soon, he arrived at a critical fork in the road. His project was no longer just a personal endeavor. He had to decide how to license it. His initial self-written license forbade any commercial use. But as people began asking to distribute copies and recoup their costs, he realized this was untenable. He could have followed the well-trodden path. He could have tried to package and sell it, creating a small company around his creation. Or he could have used a permissive license, like the BSD license, which would allow others to use his code however they wished, even if it meant them turning it into their own proprietary, closed-source product. Instead, he made a choice that was both pragmatic and revolutionary.
The Bet on Radical Collaboration
In 1992, Torvalds re-licensed the Linux kernel under the GNU General Public License, version 2 (GPLv2). This was the hidden bet. The GPL came with a crucial condition known as "copyleft": anyone could use, modify, and distribute the code for free, but any derivative works they created must also be distributed under the same GPL license. This masterstroke prevented anyone—especially a large corporation—from taking Linux, improving it, and then closing it off to the community. Torvalds himself has called this his best decision ever. He wagered that by legally forcing collaboration and requiring all improvements to be given back to the community, he could attract a global army of developers. He was betting that this shared, open model would build something far more robust and innovative than any single company could achieve on its own. It was a bet on community over corporation, on transparency over secrecy.
How the Gamble Reshaped Technology
The bet paid off on a scale Torvalds himself could never have imagined. The GPLv2 license created a safe zone for both individual hobbyists and corporate giants like IBM, Red Hat, and eventually even Microsoft to contribute code, knowing their competitors were legally obligated to do the same. This prevented the fragmentation that had plagued earlier UNIX systems and created a virtuous cycle of improvement. Because of that single licensing decision, Linux grew from a student's hobby into the engine that powers much of the modern world. It is the foundation of the Android operating system on billions of smartphones, runs the vast majority of the world's web servers, and powers every single one of the world's top 500 supercomputers. Torvalds's genius wasn't just in writing a kernel; it was in understanding the social and economic engineering required to build a lasting, collaborative ecosystem.
