Threat 1: The Ghost of Your Own Success
Leaving a company you co-founded is hard. Leaving a world-changing phenomenon like Twitter is a creative and psychological minefield. After departing in 2011, Stone faced a challenge few can appreciate: how do you start over when your last project became
a global utility? The weight of expectation can crush a founder’s next move. Stone’s answer was to launch the Obvious Corporation with his frequent collaborators, and later, a Q&A app called Jelly in 2014. The app, which used images to ask questions, was a departure from Twitter's text-based immediacy. Though it launched with significant hype, Jelly never achieved the escape velocity of his previous venture. For many founders, this perceived 'sophomore slump' would be a crushing blow, a sign that they were a one-hit wonder. But Stone framed it not as a failure to replicate Twitter, but as an experiment in a different kind of connection—one based on helpfulness rather than broadcast. He survived the ghost of his own success by refusing to be haunted by it, choosing instead to remain 'emotionally invested' in the new work itself.
Threat 2: The Public Failure and Graceful Exit
By 2017, it was clear Jelly wasn't going to be the next big thing. The app struggled to gain traction against established habits, namely people just turning to Google for answers. This is a critical failure point for most entrepreneurs. A high-profile founder shutting down a hyped venture often leads to public embarrassment and a loss of investor confidence. Instead of letting Jelly crash and burn, Stone engineered a different outcome. He sold the company to Pinterest. The deal was less about acquiring a user base and more about Pinterest absorbing a talented team and a founder with a unique perspective on search and human curation. Stone himself joined Pinterest as a special advisor. This move turned a potential career-ending failure into a strategic 'soft landing'. It preserved his reputation as a product thinker and demonstrated an important lesson: in the volatile world of tech, a graceful exit can be a form of winning. He proved that you can fail spectacularly without it being the end of the story, a philosophy he has often championed.
Threat 3: The 'Defeat' of Going Home
Just months after selling Jelly, Stone made another move that would be considered a sign of defeat for many founders: he went back. In May 2017, at the invitation of CEO Jack Dorsey, Stone announced he was returning to a full-time role at Twitter. At the time, Twitter was struggling with stagnant user growth, management turmoil, and a battered stock price. For a founder who had left to build new things, returning to a troubled 'old' company could have been seen as an admission that he had run out of ideas. But Stone framed his return differently. He wasn't replacing anyone or taking a formal executive title. His stated mission was to 'guide the company culture' and fill the 'Biz-shaped hole' that had been left. He was returning not as a defeated general, but as a cultural touchstone, a peacemaker between feuding co-founders, and a source of morale. This allowed him to sidestep the narrative of failure and instead author a new chapter about stewardship and legacy, proving that sometimes the most powerful move isn't starting something new, but shaping the soul of what you've already built.
