The Speed You Buy vs. The Speed You Get
There’s a fundamental misunderstanding most of us have about internet performance. We fixate on the number our Internet Service Provider (ISP) sells us—that shiny 1 Gigabit-per-second (Gbps) plan. But that number only governs the speed between your home
and the wider internet. Inside your home, you have a Local Area Network (LAN) that connects all your devices to each other and to the router. This internal network has its own speed limits. If your LAN is slower than your internet plan, you’re creating a bottleneck and effectively throwing away the performance you’re paying for. It’s like having a six-lane highway that leads to a one-lane dirt road; the traffic is going to back up.
The Modern Standard: 1Gbps Gigabit Ethernet
For years, 1Gbps—often called Gigabit Ethernet—has been the gold standard for wired connections. It’s fast enough for the vast majority of activities: streaming 4K movies, online gaming, and general web browsing. Most routers, switches, and computers sold today come standard with 1Gbps ports. However, calling it the standard doesn't mean it’s sufficient for everyone, especially as our digital lives become more demanding. It supports a theoretical maximum of 1,000 megabits per second, though in reality, you’ll see closer to 940 Mbps due to network overhead. This is plenty for one person doing one thing, but can become a chokepoint in a busy household or a data-heavy small business.
The Power User's Upgrade: 10GbE
This is where 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) comes in. Once the exclusive domain of data centers, 10GbE hardware has become affordable enough for prosumers, content creators, and small businesses. The jump is significant: a 100GB file that takes about 15 minutes to transfer over a 1Gbps network can move in under two minutes on a 10GbE network. Who needs this? Anyone who regularly moves massive files between devices. Think video editors working with 4K or 8K footage, photographers with huge RAW files, or tech enthusiasts running a local media server like Plex. In a multi-user environment where several people are accessing a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device or streaming high-bitrate content simultaneously, 10GbE ensures there are no slowdowns.
The Enterprise Level: 40GbE and 100GbE
To put home and small business networking in perspective, it’s worth knowing what the top end looks like. Speeds like 40GbE and 100GbE are the backbone of the modern internet. These are used in data centers, by cloud providers, and for the core infrastructure that connects cities and countries. They handle immense volumes of traffic from millions of users simultaneously. For instance, an internet exchange point, where different provider networks meet, will use 100GbE ports to manage the flow of data. This level of hardware is not intended for consumer use, but it shows the scale of data consumption that drives the need for faster speeds at every level.
Your Network's Hidden Bottlenecks
Upgrading to a faster Ethernet standard isn’t as simple as buying one new piece of equipment. Your network is only as fast as its slowest component. An old Ethernet cable is a common culprit. A Cat5e cable can handle 1Gbps, but for 10GbE, you really need at least a Cat6a cable. Likewise, if you have a 10GbE-capable computer but it’s plugged into a cheap, old 100 Mbps network switch, you’ll be limited to that lower speed. Even your router's processing power can become a bottleneck; if it's too busy managing connections, VPNs, or security features, it may not be able to route traffic at full speed. Identifying and upgrading these weak links is the key to unlocking the performance you expect.
