The Underdog from Norway
Long before Google Chrome existed, a small team in Norway was building a different kind of browser. Started in 1994 as a research project at Telenor, Norway's largest telecommunications company, Opera was born from a simple but powerful idea: create a fast,
efficient browser that didn't require a monster computer to run. When its first public version was released in 1996, the web was a two-horse race between Netscape Navigator and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Opera entered the fray as a shareware product, a scrappy third option focused on innovation rather than market dominance. Its philosophy was to adhere strictly to web standards and to build features for power users, creating a loyal, if small, cult following.
The Birth of the Modern Tab
It’s hard to imagine browsing the web without tabs, but before the early 2000s, every new page opened an entirely new window, cluttering desktops and making multitasking a nightmare. While a few niche browsers had experimented with the concept, it was Opera that truly championed and refined tabbed browsing as a core feature in 2000. This innovation was a game-changer, allowing users to manage multiple pages within a single, organized window. It was so revolutionary that it was eventually adopted by every major competitor, from Mozilla Firefox to Apple's Safari and, years later, Internet Explorer 7. The tab is arguably Opera’s single greatest contribution to computing, an idea so fundamental that we can no longer imagine the internet without it.
An Explosion of 'Firsts'
Opera's influence didn't stop with tabs. The Norwegian browser was a veritable factory of ideas that are now standard across the industry. The “Speed Dial”—that grid of your favorite websites that appears when you open a new tab—was an Opera invention, designed to make navigation faster and more visual. Before that, new tabs were just blank pages. It also pioneered mouse gestures, which allowed users to perform actions like going back a page or opening a link by holding the right mouse button and making a quick motion. It introduced a built-in pop-up blocker when intrusive ads were rampant, and was among the first to offer features like browser session saving and the ability to sync bookmarks and history across devices. Each of these was a small revolution, making the browser smarter, faster, and more attuned to the user.
The Mobile Web Pioneer
Opera's knack for efficiency found its true calling on mobile devices. In 2005, it launched Opera Mini, a browser designed for the less powerful feature phones of the era. Its secret weapon was server-side compression. Instead of a phone’s weak processor doing all the work, web pages were first sent to Opera's servers, compressed by up to 90%, and then sent to the device. This meant faster load times, dramatically less data usage, and the ability to render complex websites on very basic hardware. This focus on accessibility and performance on low-powered devices was years ahead of the 'mobile-first' design philosophy that now dominates web development, making the full internet accessible to millions who couldn't afford a high-end smartphone.
The Ripple Effect of a Quiet Giant
Despite its history of innovation, Opera never won the browser wars. At its peak, its desktop market share barely registered against the dominance of Internet Explorer and later Chrome. But its success isn't measured in user numbers. It's measured in influence. Firefox and Safari popularized tabs, Google Chrome's new tab page is a direct descendant of Speed Dial, and a whole ecosystem of browser extensions for other platforms now replicates the mouse gestures Opera introduced over two decades ago. While other companies had the market power, Opera consistently had the vision. It served as an external research and development lab for the entire industry, testing and proving concepts that would go on to reshape how every American interacts with the digital world. In 2013, Opera made the switch to using Chromium, the same open-source engine as Chrome, a move that some saw as the end of an era but also as a practical concession to modern web compatibility.
