The All-in-One Cloud Dream
Aruba's big pitch centers on Aruba Central, a cloud-native platform designed to be a single pane of glass for your entire network—wired, wireless, and WAN. The marketing promises simplified management, where you configure policies once and deploy them
everywhere. In production, this unified dream is largely achievable but comes with a learning curve. While Central offers powerful API capabilities and group-based configurations that can streamline changes across thousands of devices, navigating the interface can feel clunky. Onboarding new hardware, for instance, involves a multi-step process between the HPE GreenLake platform and Central itself that some users find cumbersome. The power is real, but it’s not quite the effortless, plug-and-play experience some might expect.
AI Operations: Insight or Noise?
AIOps (AI for IT Operations) is one of Aruba’s most heavily promoted features, promising to proactively identify network issues before users even notice. The system uses AI to analyze network telemetry and provide insights into performance and potential problems. In the real world, these AI insights can be genuinely useful, flagging configuration anomalies or Wi-Fi coverage gaps. However, making sense of the data requires expertise. The system may generate a flood of alerts, and it’s up to the network team to distinguish critical issues from statistical noise. Furthermore, the most advanced AI capabilities, like Agent AI that can reason and perform autonomous actions, are still evolving. It’s less of a fully autonomous network brain and more of a very smart assistant that still needs guidance and interpretation from a skilled human operator.
Security That Follows the User
A core tenet of Aruba's philosophy is integrated, identity-based security. Features like Dynamic Segmentation are designed to eliminate the need for manually configuring countless VLANs and access control lists (ACLs). The system creates security policies based on a user's role, and those policies follow them regardless of how or where they connect. This is a powerful concept foundational to a Zero Trust security model. In production, setting this up correctly is a significant project. It relies on a well-configured policy manager, like Aruba ClearPass, to handle authentication and role assignment. While it dramatically simplifies security management in the long run, the initial implementation requires careful planning and a deep understanding of network and security principles. It’s not a feature you simply “turn on.”
The Shift to Subscriptions and NaaS
Like much of the tech industry, Aruba is moving aggressively toward a subscription-based model. Through HPE GreenLake for Networking, customers can consume hardware, software, and services as a Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) for a recurring monthly fee. This model offers budget predictability and shifts costs from capital expenditures (CapEx) to operating expenses (OpEx). In practice, this changes how IT teams must think about procurement and lifecycle management. While NaaS can prevent owning aging hardware, it also means you’re in a continuous subscription relationship. Understanding the fine print of the service packs—what hardware, software, and service levels are included—is critical. It simplifies many things, but it also introduces a new layer of vendor management and contractual complexity that differs from a traditional one-time hardware purchase.
