websites, and the rest of us just consumed the information. These were the days of GeoCities, basic HTML, and painfully slow dial-up connections. The experience was passive; you could read content, but you couldn't really interact with it, leave comments, or create your own space easily. The web was a repository of information, much like a library where the books are for browsing, not for writing in.
The 'Read-Write' Web: We Became the Content
Then came Web 2.0, kicking off in the early 2000s. This wasn’t a formal software update but a fundamental shift in philosophy. The web became interactive and participatory. Frustrated with the data exploitation and centralized power of Web 2.0, proponents of Web3 envision a decentralized internet built on technologies like blockchain. The core idea is to shift power back to users, allowing them to truly own their data, digital identity, and online assets. Instead of logging into a dozen sites owned by a few tech giants, you’d have a single, self-controlled identity. The goal is a more transparent, user-centric web where creators are rewarded directly and intermediaries become less powerful. It’s a compelling vision of taking back control from Big Tech.
Why the Clean Chapters Are a Myth
Here's where the simple story breaks down. These “webs” are not distinct, sequential eras where one replaces the other. The reality is a messy overlap. Static Web 1.0 sites still exist and serve important functions. More importantly, the principles of Web 2.0—centralized platforms, user-generated content, and data monetization—are more dominant than ever. Web 3.0 is not replacing Web 2.0; it's being built on top of it, often as a hybrid. Many so-called Web3 applications still rely on traditional Web2 servers and infrastructure to provide a smooth user experience, because blockchains are often slow and complex. Thinking of them as separate versions misses the point entirely.
It's Not a Timeline, It's a Tug-of-War
The real story isn't about version numbers. It's a constant, ongoing ideological battle between centralization and decentralization. Centralization, the hallmark of Web 2.0, offers convenience, speed, and polished user experiences, but at the cost of control and privacy. Decentralization, the promise of Web 3.0, offers ownership, transparency, and censorship resistance, but often at the cost of usability and scale. This isn't a race with a finish line. It’s a tug-of-war over the internet's soul. Successful platforms of the future will likely be hybrids, combining the usability of Web2 with the trust and ownership principles of Web3. The evolution of the web is not a straight line but a complex dance between these opposing forces.
