The vast majority of this money is flowing toward AI infrastructure, including purchasing millions of GPUs from suppliers like NVIDIA. Meta's goal is to build one of the most powerful AI systems on the planet to enhance its family of apps—Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—with advanced recommendation algorithms and new generative AI features. The core tension for Meta is that this spending is happening now, squeezing operating margins, while the significant revenue payoff is still a future promise.
A Tale of Two Balance Sheets
The contrast in their financial approaches is stark. NVIDIA is in a harvest phase, converting the market's AI frenzy directly into massive profits and free cash flow.
