While past crypto cycles were driven by speculation, the leading L2s are now home to a growing number of applications with real-world utility that retain users even when prices are down. Arbitrum has become a powerhouse for decentralized finance (DeFi), with deep liquidity that traders rely on. Optimism powers a vast, interconnected “Superchain” of networks, including for major brands. As of mid-2026, the L2 market has seen significant consolidation, with Base, Arbitrum, and Optimism handling the overwhelming majority of all L2 transactions. This dominance creates a powerful network effect: developers build where the users are, and users go where the best apps are. This created a defensible moat. While dozens of smaller L2s struggled or failed, the big three thrived by attracting top-tier projects and institutional interest. For example, financial giants like Robinhood have chosen to build on Arbitrum, while Base's connection to Coinbase gives it an unparalleled distribution advantage.
