The World Before the Breakup
For most of the 20th century, AT&T wasn't just a phone company; it was the phone company. Colloquially known as "Ma Bell," it operated as a government-sanctioned monopoly controlling nearly every aspect
of American telecommunications. This included local and long-distance service, the physical phones in people's homes, and the wires connecting them. At the heart of this empire was Bell Telephone Laboratories, or Bell Labs, its legendary research and development arm. The Antitrust Earthquake
The U.S. government grew increasingly wary of AT&T's immense power. By the 1970s, the Department of Justice argued that Ma Bell was using its monopoly over local phone networks to stifle competition in emerging markets like long-distance calling and telephone equipment. After a grueling eight-year antitrust lawsuit that began in 1974, AT&T was backed into a corner. Facing an unwinnable trial, the company agreed in 1982 to a landmark settlement. On January 1, 1984, AT&T was formally broken up, divesting its 22 local operating companies into seven independent regional businesses, famously known as the "Baby Bells." The remaining AT&T was now a smaller company focused on long-distance, but it was also suddenly freed from prior regulations that had barred it from entering the computer market.
An Unintended Tech Explosion

Before 1984, a 1956 consent decree had prevented the monopoly-era AT&T from commercializing technologies unrelated to its core telephone business. This meant that world-changing inventions like the UNIX operating system and the C programming language, both born at Bell Labs, were largely kept on the shelf or licensed cheaply to universities and researchers. The breakup shattered this arrangement. Now a competitor, AT&T was free to try and sell UNIX commercially. The knowledge and even the source code that had been bottled up inside Bell Labs began to flow freely, fueling the personal computer revolution and the rise of open-source software.

The C programming language, created to build UNIX, remains one of the most influential languages in history, forming the basis for successors like C++. The very idea of a competitive telecommunications market, with multiple carriers and equipment manufacturers, was a direct result of the government's decision to dismantle Ma Bell.
