Before the Web: A Different Online World
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, 'going online' in America meant something very different. For millions, the internet wasn't a boundless universe but a curated theme park. Companies like CompuServe, Prodigy, and America Online (AOL) were the gatekeepers.
They were 'walled gardens,' offering a package of email, forums, news, and games for an hourly fee. Everything was self-contained. You used AOL's content on AOL's service. It was a top-down, controlled, and profitable business model that defined the first era of consumer computing. Getting outside these walls was difficult and, for most, unimaginable.
A Solution for Scientists, A Gift to the World
Thousands of miles away at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, British scientist Tim Berners-Lee faced a different problem. Thousands of international scientists needed to share data across different, incompatible computer systems. His 1989 proposal, initially labeled 'vague, but exciting' by his boss, outlined a solution: a decentralized system for linking information. By late 1990, he had created its three core components: HTML (the language to create pages), URL (the address for each page), and HTTP (the protocol to connect them). He called his creation the WorldWideWeb. It was designed not for profit, but to solve a practical problem of information sharing.
The Decision That Changed Everything
The Web could have easily become another proprietary system, licensed and controlled. Rival systems like Gopher, from the University of Minnesota, were exploring charging for their software. But in a move that would define the next 30 years of technology, CERN made a momentous decision. On April 30, 1993, the organization placed the World Wide Web's core software and protocols into the public domain, making it completely free and royalty-free for anyone to use, build on, and modify. This act of radical openness was the Web's superpower. It ensured no single company could ever own the foundational layer of this new digital space.
From a Lab in Illinois to Every Desktop
CERN's gift was profound, but the Web was still largely a tool for academics. It lacked a killer app. That app came from a different lab: the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois. In 1993, a team led by student Marc Andreessen and programmer Eric Bina released Mosaic, the first web browser that was easy to install and could display images within a text page, not in a separate window. This was the spark. Mosaic transformed the text-heavy Web into a graphical, engaging medium. Suddenly, the Web wasn't just for scientists. It was for everyone, and America, with its booming PC market, was ground zero for the explosion.
The Fall of the Old Guard
Mosaic's success, followed by Netscape Navigator and others, turned the Web into a tidal wave that crashed against the walled gardens of AOL and CompuServe. The Web's architecture was inherently disruptive. Why pay an hourly rate for AOL's curated content when you could access a universe of information, published by anyone, from anywhere? The Web's open, decentralized nature completely dismantled the business model of the online service giants. It shifted the power from a few corporations that controlled the experience to countless individuals and businesses that could now publish their own 'dot-com' address, reshaping American commerce, media, and communication in the process.
