When Wi-Fi first launched in the late 90s, it immediately split into two camps, defined by the IEEE 802.11a and 802.11b standards. This wasn't an accident; it was a fundamental debate about what wireless internet should be. 802.11a operated on the clean,

uncongested 5 GHz frequency band, offering faster speeds up to 54 Mbps. It was the high-performance option. By the time 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) arrived in 2019, the challenge had changed again. The issue was no longer about getting one device to go extremely fast; it was about getting dozens of devices—phones, laptops, speakers, lights, cameras, thermostats—to all work smoothly at the same time. While Wi-Fi 6 is faster, its real innovation is efficiency in crowded environments.
