Before diving into the mistakes, let's quickly define the term. Gross margin is the difference between the revenue a company generates from selling a product and the direct cost of making that product (known as the cost of goods sold, or COGS). Think
of it as the price of a car minus the cost of the steel, batteries, labor, and other factory-level expenses needed to build it. Mistake #1: Ignoring Regulatory Credits
One of the most common errors is failing to separate automotive gross margin from the revenue generated by selling regulatory credits. As a manufacturer of zero-emission vehicles, Tesla earns credits from various government programs. It can then sell these credits to other automakers that don't meet their emissions targets. This is a lucrative business, and the revenue from these sales is almost pure profit. When Tesla includes this high-margin credit revenue in its overall automotive results, it can artificially inflate the perceived profitability of its car-building operations. For a clearer picture of manufacturing health, analysts often look at the "automotive gross margin ex-credits." This figure strips out the credit revenue to reveal how profitable the actual process of building and selling cars is, which is a much more stable, long-term indicator of operational performance.
Mistake #2: Conflating Auto and Energy Margins
Tesla isn't just a car company; it also has a fast-growing energy generation and storage division that sells products like the Powerwall and large-scale Megapack batteries. This business has a completely different margin profile from the automotive segment. At times, the energy division has posted stellar gross margins, even temporarily surpassing 39% in early 2026, though this was boosted by one-time benefits. Tesla's CFO has since guided that long-term energy margins are expected to normalize in the mid-to-low 20% range.
