An Wang arrived in the United States in 1945, earning a Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard just three years later. While working at the university's Computation Laboratory, he tackled one of the biggest challenges of early computing: memory. His breakthrough
was the invention of the magnetic core memory, a device using small magnetic rings to store data. This innovation was crucial because it provided a stable and reliable way to access information electronically, a massive leap from less dependable methods. In 1951, armed with his patent and entrepreneurial drive, he founded Wang Laboratories as a one-man operation. A few years later, he sold the patent for his memory invention to IBM for $500,000, a significant sum that provided the capital to fuel his company's future growth.
From Calculators to Computers
Wang didn't immediately jump into building massive computers. His genius was in identifying practical, real-world business needs. He first turned his attention to the burgeoning market for electronic calculators. In 1965, the company introduced the LOCI, a desktop calculator that could compute logarithms with a single keypress—a feature that made it an instant hit in scientific and engineering fields. This success established Wang Laboratories as a maker of sophisticated, user-friendly electronic devices. The revenue from calculators helped the company grow steadily, reaching $1 million in sales by 1964 and setting the stage for its most significant pivot. This era proved Wang was not just a brilliant inventor, but also a sharp businessman who understood how to commercialize technology.
The Word Processing Revolution
The product that made Wang a household name in offices across America was the dedicated word processor. In the mid-1970s, typing was still done on typewriters, where a single mistake could mean re-typing an entire page. Wang's systems changed everything. The Wang 1200 WPS, introduced in 1976, was a machine built specifically for creating and editing text. Its true successor, the Office Information System (OIS), was even more revolutionary. The OIS was a multi-user system, allowing multiple typists to work on documents stored on a central server, sharing files and printers. It was, in effect, a precursor to the modern office network. For law firms, government agencies, and large corporations, this was a productivity miracle, cementing Wang's dominance in the office automation market throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.
The Peak and the Blind Spot
At its zenith in the early 1980s, Wang Laboratories was a behemoth, with annual revenues hitting $3 billion and over 33,000 employees worldwide. The company was a cornerstone of the "Massachusetts Miracle," the region's high-tech boom. An Wang was celebrated as an indispensable leader who guided both product strategy and the company's paternalistic culture. However, this insular strength would become a critical weakness. The company became a victim of its own success, committed to its proprietary systems—hardware and software that only worked with other Wang products. When the IBM Personal Computer (PC) arrived in the 1980s, promoting an open architecture that anyone could build upon, Wang saw it as an inferior product rather than a fundamental market shift. The company failed to embrace the PC revolution, continuing to build its own incompatible machines.
A Legacy Beyond the Logo
The company's decline was swift. Compounded by a difficult leadership transition where An Wang appointed his son, Frederick, as his successor, the company struggled to adapt. An Wang returned to the helm in 1989 but passed away in 1990. Without its visionary founder and unable to compete with the low-cost, flexible world of PCs, Wang Laboratories filed for bankruptcy protection in 1992. While the company itself is gone, acquired by a Dutch firm in 1999, An Wang's legacy endures. He was a pioneer who proved that technology's greatest value was in making complex tasks simple for everyday users. The networked, collaborative, and highly productive office environment we take for granted today owes much to the vision of the immigrant engineer who saw the future of work from his small Boston shop.
