The Breakthrough at the Moore School
The story begins in the 1940s at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering. World War II was raging, and the U.S. Army needed to calculate artillery-firing tables faster than humanly possible. The answer was a colossal machine
called the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), the world's first large-scale general-purpose electronic computer. The brilliant minds behind this room-sized behemoth of vacuum tubes and wires were John Mauchly, a physicist with visionary ideas, and J. Presper Eckert, a young, genius engineer who brought those ideas to life. The ENIAC was a staggering success, proving that electronic computation was not just possible, but practical. As the war ended, Eckert and Mauchly were already designing its successor, the EDVAC, which would incorporate the game-changing concept of a stored program. They were on the verge of inventing the modern computer.
A Dispute Over a Patent
This is where the hidden decision comes in. As Eckert and Mauchly's work progressed, the University of Pennsylvania moved to formalize its patent policy. The university asserted that it should own the rights to inventions developed using its resources, a standard practice in academia today. They presented Eckert and Mauchly with an ultimatum in March 1946: sign over the patents for all their work, including future inventions, or leave. For the two inventors, this was unacceptable. They believed their intellectual property was their own and saw a massive commercial future for their creations. They refused to sign. This single act of defiance—the decision to retain control of their ideas rather than surrender them to their institution—set the stage for the birth of the commercial computer industry. They resigned from the Moore School, severing ties with the academic world that had nurtured their groundbreaking work.
The First Tech Startup
Striking out on their own, the duo founded the Electronic Control Company in 1946, which soon became the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation (EMCC). In doing so, they essentially created the template for the modern tech startup: brilliant engineers leaving a larger institution to commercialize a revolutionary idea. Their first major contract came from the U.S. Census Bureau, which desperately needed a machine to handle the post-war population boom. This machine was the UNIVAC, or Universal Automatic Computer. But building a computer from scratch with no steady funding was a monumental task. While Eckert handled the complex engineering, Mauchly scrambled for clients and cash. The company struggled, burning through money as the UNIVAC's development timeline stretched longer and longer.
A Fateful Sale to Remington Rand
By 1950, EMCC was on the brink of bankruptcy. Faced with financial ruin, Eckert and Mauchly made another fateful decision: they sold their company and their patents to Remington Rand, a maker of typewriters and electric shavers. The sale saved the UNIVAC project—the first machine was delivered to the Census Bureau in March 1951—but it came at a cost. Eckert and Mauchly, once the masters of their own destiny, became employees in a large, bureaucratic corporation that didn't fully grasp the revolutionary technology it had acquired. The corporate culture frustrated many of the original engineers. Mauchly in particular felt marginalized and eventually left the company in 1959. While UNIVAC had an early lead, Remington Rand's cumbersome management style allowed a more nimble competitor, IBM, to eventually dominate the burgeoning mainframe market.
