In the 1980s, as computer networks grew, they faced a critical problem: redundant links could create endless data loops, causing the entire network to collapse. Perlman invented the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), an elegant algorithm that allows networks to automatically find and disable these destructive loops while maintaining backup paths. This invention made large-scale, stable Ethernet networks possible. Without STP, the internet as we know it would be far less robust. Like Hopper’s compiler, which translated human ideas into machine language, Perlman’s protocol created the invisible, self-organizing rules that allow complex systems to function seamlessly.
4. Margaret Hamilton: The Pioneer of Process
Grace Hopper was famous for her exacting standards and for popularizing the term “debugging.” Margaret Hamilton, who led the software development for NASA's Apollo missions, took that focus on reliability to a new dimension. She is credited with coining the term “software engineering” to legitimize the discipline and give it the same rigor as other engineering fields. Her team developed the on-board flight software for the Apollo command and lunar modules. This software was so robust that it could prioritize critical tasks and disregard less important ones, a feature that proved vital during the Apollo 11 moon landing when the system became overloaded. After her time at NASA, Hamilton founded two software companies to apply these principles of ultra-reliable software design. Grace Hopper famously followed the mantra, “It's easier to ask for forgiveness than to get permission.” She was a trailblazer who entered the male-dominated worlds of academia and the military and fundamentally changed them. In 2012, she founded Clue, a menstrual health tracking app, at a time when technology for women's health was largely ignored by investors and builders.
