Moving your main router to a central, elevated location on the main floor is the single most effective free fix you can make. Get it out of the corner, away from the floor, and clear of other electronics. Second, for true gold-standard performance, nothing beats a wire. If possible, running an Ethernet cable to one or two key locations—like a home office or entertainment center—and plugging in a dedicated access point provides a flawless connection that doesn't rely on repeating a wireless signal.
