From making Search conversational with Gemini-powered overviews to building enterprise AI solutions on Google Cloud, the company is betting its future on artificial intelligence. Google Cloud, once a distant third in the cloud wars, has become a primary growth engine, with revenue growth accelerating significantly. The backlog of committed spending from cloud customers has skyrocketed, suggesting immense demand for Google's AI infrastructure. The Staggering, Hidden Cost of Genius
Here's the reality check. Building that AI future is astronomically expensive. For 2026, Alphabet has guided its capital expenditures—the money spent on physical assets like data centers and servers—to a jaw-dropping figure approaching $190 billion. That’s nearly double what it spent just a year prior. This spending is almost entirely to build out the infrastructure for AI, from massive data centers to fleets of its custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) needed to train and run advanced models. These aren't one-time costs; they represent a fundamental increase in the baseline expense of doing business. This immense investment puts direct and sustained pressure on profitability.
Where the Margin Tells the Real Story
This is where operating margin cuts through the noise. For years, Google’s core Search business has been a cash-printing machine with incredible operating margins, sometimes estimated to be over 50%. That highly profitable engine has funded everything else. However, the different parts of Alphabet have vastly different margin profiles.
