After Andy Rubin stepped down, Lockheimer eventually became the senior vice president overseeing Android, Chrome, and more. During his leadership tenure through releases like KitKat and Lollipop, a key strategic decision was to push Android beyond the phone. A decade after giving Android its first design language, Matías Duarte's team made another revolutionary leap. With Android 12, Google introduced Material You. Instead of a single, static design, Material You uses a dynamic color system that extracts hues from the user's wallpaper and applies them across the entire interface.
