The Promise: A Fix for Ethereum’s Traffic Jam
For years, the biggest problem with decentralized finance (DeFi) has been its own success. Ethereum, the network where most DeFi activity happens, can be compared to a single-lane highway. When traffic gets heavy, everything slows down and the cost of
passage—the 'gas fee'—skyrockets. This prices out many everyday users and limits the complexity of applications developers can build. The search for a solution led to Layer 2 networks, which act like express lanes, processing transactions separately and then bundling them up to settle on the main Ethereum highway. Among these solutions, those using zero-knowledge proofs, or ZK-proofs, were seen as the ultimate upgrade, promising massive scalability without compromising security.
The Technology: What Made zkEVM So Special?
Polygon’s zkEVM combined two powerful concepts. The first part, 'ZK' (Zero-Knowledge), is a cryptographic method that allows for the validation of a huge batch of transactions by generating a single, tiny proof of their correctness, without revealing any of the underlying data. This massively improves efficiency and privacy. The second part, 'EVM' (Ethereum Virtual Machine), was its killer feature. It meant the network was 'EVM-equivalent,' allowing developers to move their existing Ethereum apps and tools over with almost no changes. On paper, it was the perfect combination: the speed and low cost of ZK-rollups with the plug-and-play ease of the massive Ethereum ecosystem. It promised to finally make DeFi and other blockchain applications accessible to a mass audience.
The Quiet Reality: A Struggle for Traction
While the technology was promising, its launch was met with a market that had already started moving. Competing Layer 2 solutions, particularly 'Optimistic Rollups' like Arbitrum and Optimism, had a head start and were simpler to implement, quickly capturing the majority of users and developer activity. Behind the scenes, Polygon's zkEVM struggled. It failed to gain significant user adoption, with its total value locked remaining a tiny fraction of its competitors'. Furthermore, it never implemented a crucial Ethereum upgrade known as EIP-4844 (or 'blobs'), which was designed to dramatically lower costs for rollups. As a result, the network operated at a significant financial loss, reportedly costing millions per year to maintain. The 'quiet reshaping' wasn't one of market dominance, but of a high-cost project failing to find its audience.
The Sunset: A Hard Pivot to a New Strategy
In mid-2025, reports began to surface that Polygon had quietly abandoned active development on the project. The speculation was confirmed when Polygon announced that the zkEVM Mainnet Beta would be officially 'sunset'—or shut down—as of early July 2026. The decision marked the end of a venture that began with the $250 million acquisition of the Hermez Network in 2021. Instead of continuing to pour resources into a product that wasn't working, Polygon shifted its focus toward its more successful Proof-of-Stake (PoS) chain and a new vision called the 'AggLayer,' designed to unify liquidity across different blockchains. The company provided a window for users to claim and withdraw their remaining assets from the defunct network.
