Since its founding in 2004, OpenStreetMap (OSM) has been an anomaly. It was created by Steve Coast in the UK as a response to government mapping agencies that kept their valuable data under lock and key. The idea was simple: what if anyone could map their own
neighborhood and share that data freely? In an industry now worth billions, dominated by the slick, all-encompassing services of Google, Apple, and others, a non-profit, crowdsourced map should have been a quaint, failed experiment. Instead, it has become a critical piece of internet infrastructure used by humanitarian organizations, governments, and even the tech giants themselves, including Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft. While most users interact with it indirectly through apps like Snapchat, Pokémon Go, or Wikipedia, its data forms the backbone of countless services. Its longevity defies typical business logic, which begs the question: how has it not only survived but flourished?
It’s Not Just Because It’s Free
The most obvious answer—that OSM survives because it’s free—is also the most incomplete. While being free certainly helped, especially after Google Maps began charging for high-volume use of its API in 2012, “free” doesn’t guarantee quality or sustainability. A project relying on volunteers must compete with corporations that have armies of paid engineers and fleets of camera-equipped cars. The real secret to OSM’s endurance isn’t its price tag; it’s its structure. Unlike a commercial product, OSM is what’s known as a “digital commons”: a shared resource built and maintained by a community for the public good. This isn't just a philosophical distinction; it’s a strategic advantage that has made it incredibly resilient.
The Power of Having No Owner
The hidden reason OpenStreetMap has survived is that it belongs to no one and, therefore, to everyone. A corporate entity can be acquired, lose funding, pivot to a new strategy, or be shut down. Its goals are ultimately beholden to shareholders and profit margins. Google can change its API terms, prioritize advertisers, or abandon projects at will. OpenStreetMap, managed by the non-profit OpenStreetMap Foundation, cannot be sold or fundamentally change its mission. Its sole purpose is to create and maintain a free and open map of the world. This radical independence is its greatest strength. Contributors aren't just unpaid workers; they are co-owners of a global resource, motivated by a desire to create something useful and lasting. This fosters a level of dedication that a top-down corporate structure can't replicate.
A Neutral Ground for Mortal Enemies
This independence has an interesting side effect: it makes OSM a neutral playground for corporate behemoths that are otherwise fierce competitors. Companies like Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft all use and contribute to OpenStreetMap. Why? Because relying on a competitor's mapping service (like Google Maps) creates a strategic vulnerability. By investing in and improving the neutral territory of OSM, they ensure access to a high-quality, stable data source that no single rival controls. They can download the entire dataset and use it however they wish, something impossible with proprietary services. This creates a strange but powerful alliance where competitors, acting in their own self-interest, collectively enrich a public good, a phenomenon described as the opposite of the “tragedy of the commons.”
Built to Last, Not to Sell
The volunteer-led model also allows for a different kind of detail. While mapping cars capture streets, OSM contributors add the footpaths, park benches, wheelchair ramps, and local landmarks that matter to a community. In many parts of the world, particularly in developing nations, OSM is often more detailed and accurate than commercial maps because it’s built by the people who live there. This focus on utility over commercial value has made it indispensable for humanitarian aid, urban planning, and academic research. The project's success is measured not in quarterly earnings but in its completeness and usefulness to the world. It’s a system designed for longevity, not for a quick exit.
