When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in January 2007, he presented it as a perfect, sealed object. It was three revolutionary devices in one: a widescreen iPod, a mobile phone, and an internet communicator. What it was not, in his mind, was a platform
for outside developers. Jobs was fiercely protective of the user experience. He feared that third-party applications would create a host of problems: viruses, malware, instability, and apps that would 'mess up the phone.' His initial vision was a closed ecosystem, a digital fortress where Apple controlled every single piece of software. Developers who wanted to build for the iPhone? They were, for all intents and purposes, locked out. To Jobs, protecting the pristine functionality of his creation was more important than anything else.
The Web App 'Solution'
The pressure from the developer community was immediate and intense. They saw the iPhone's potential and were desperate to get on board. At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2007, Jobs offered a compromise, but it was one that pleased almost no one. He announced that developers could create 'web apps'—essentially, glorified website bookmarks that could be saved to the iPhone's home screen. In late 2007, Jobs finally relented. But the truly 'hidden' and brilliant decision wasn't simply to say 'yes' to apps. It was to define *how* Apple would say yes. Instead of creating an open free-for-all, he greenlit a model that blended third-party innovation with Apple's core philosophy of control. This was the genesis of the App Store: a single, centralized, and curated marketplace. Apple would review every app. It would control the user experience of discovery and installation.
