Every manufacturer wants to boast the biggest, most impressive power number. You'll see figures like "150 watts per channel" emblazoned on the front of a receiver or featured prominently in online descriptions.
Intuitively, more watts should mean more power and better sound. The problem is, this number is often measured under completely unrealistic conditions. Typically, this impressive figure is achieved by driving only one or two of the receiver's seven or more channels. They might also test at a single, easy-to-reproduce frequency (like 1kHz) and with a higher level of distortion than you'd ever want in your living room. It’s the equivalent of a carmaker advertising a top speed that can only be reached while driving downhill with a hurricane-force tailwind.
The Spec That Really Matters
The hidden detail that truly separates powerful, high-performance receivers from the rest is the "all channels driven" power rating. Think about a chaotic action scene in a blockbuster movie: explosions are rocking the subwoofers, dialogue is locked to the center channel, and bullets are flying through all your surround speakers. In that moment, your receiver must deliver clean, consistent power to every single speaker simultaneously. This is the ultimate test of a receiver's power supply—the heavy, expensive transformer and capacitors inside that do the real work. An AV receiver has one central power supply that all the amplifier channels have to share. When only two channels are drawing power, there's plenty to go around. But when seven, nine, or even eleven channels demand power at once, the per-channel wattage can drop significantly.
Why You Have to Dig For It
So, if the "all channels driven" spec is so important, why do manufacturers make it so hard to find? The simple answer is that the numbers aren't as impressive, and the engineering required to deliver high power to all channels is expensive. A receiver that can genuinely output 100 watts to seven channels at once needs a much larger and more robust power supply than one that can only deliver 100 watts to two channels. For many mainstream models, the "all channels driven" number might be 30-40% lower than the advertised stereo power rating. Rather than advertise this lower, more honest figure, many companies simply omit it, focusing instead on the inflated two-channel spec that looks better on a comparison sheet.
How to Find the Truth
As a savvy consumer, you can cut through the marketing. While the main product page might be useless, you can often find the all-important number if you know where to look. First, download the full user manual from the manufacturer's website. Dig into the specifications section at the very end; some reputable brands will list the "all channels driven" figure here. Second, and more reliably, turn to specialist publications and websites that perform their own independent bench tests. Reputable reviewers will hook the receiver up to professional testing equipment to measure the true output with multiple channels under load, providing the numbers the manufacturers don't want you to see. If a manufacturer provides a full, honest specification with all channels driven, even if the number seems lower, it's a strong sign of a quality product.
