The World Before Secure Shell
Cast your mind back to the early internet of the 1990s. Connecting to a remote computer was a common task, but it was dangerously insecure. Protocols like Telnet and rlogin sent everything—usernames, passwords, and all your commands—across the network
in plain text. Anyone with the right tools could simply eavesdrop and steal your credentials. In 1995, a Finnish researcher named Tatu Ylönen experienced this firsthand when his university's network was hit by a password-sniffing attack. In response, he created Secure Shell, or SSH. It was revolutionary. For the first time, there was a practical tool that encrypted an entire remote session, making it virtually impossible for attackers to spy on connections. He released it as free software, and it spread like wildfire.
A Fork in the Road
Ylönen soon founded a company, SSH Communications Security, to commercialize and support his creation. Over time, the license for the original SSH software became more and more restrictive. New versions forbade use in certain contexts and required companies to purchase expensive commercial licenses. This created a huge problem for the burgeoning open-source movement. Projects like the OpenBSD operating system, which prided themselves on being completely free and open, couldn't include this crucial, now-proprietary security tool in their default installation. They faced a choice: compromise their principles or find another way.
The OpenBSD Rebellion
The OpenBSD project, known for its fanatical focus on security and code correctness, chose to find another way. In 1999, its developers took the last truly free version of Ylönen's original SSH code (version 1.2.12) and forked it. They created their own version and named it OpenSSH, with the "Open" referring directly to its commitment to a free, BSD-style license. But they didn't just fork the code; they subjected it to a rigorous, exhaustive security audit, a process they were famous for. The goal wasn't just to create a free alternative, but a more secure one, built on a philosophy of constant, public code review.
More Than a Tool, A Philosophy
This is where OpenSSH truly began to reshape software development. Its creation wasn't just about code; it was about a development ethos. The OpenBSD team pioneered practices that are now standard in high-stakes projects. They implemented "privilege separation," a design where the program splits itself into parts, with most of it running without special permissions to limit the damage a security flaw could cause. They maintained a relentless focus on clean, audited, and portable code. This philosophy—that security comes from radical transparency, constant vigilance, and a license that allows anyone to inspect and use the code—became a blueprint. It proved that a distributed team of volunteers could produce infrastructure software that was more trustworthy than its closed-source commercial counterparts.
The Unseen Engine of the Modern Web
Today, OpenSSH is the de facto standard for secure remote access, integrated into macOS, Linux, and even Windows. It is the invisible backbone of the modern internet. When a developer uses Git to push code, a system administrator automates server updates, or a cloud service provisions new machines, they are almost certainly using OpenSSH. Its influence extends beyond its own code. The success of OpenSSH helped solidify the open-source model for building critical infrastructure. Its development practices became a gold standard, influencing the culture of countless projects that followed. The idea that the most secure software is that which can be scrutinized by everyone is a direct legacy of the OpenSSH story.
