The Unlikely Casino Origins
The story of wearable computing doesn't start in a sterile lab at MIT or a Silicon Valley garage. It starts in a Las Vegas casino in 1961. Mathematicians Edward O. Thorp and Claude Shannon, considered the father of information theory, developed a cigarette-pack-sized
analog computer to cheat at roulette. The device, operated by a switch in the user's shoe, would time the speed of the roulette wheel and ball, transmitting tones to a hidden earpiece to help the user place a winning bet. While hardware issues prevented them from making a fortune, their device proved a concept: a concealed, body-worn computer could give its user a distinct advantage. Throughout the 60s and 70s, others followed suit with similar devices for card counting in blackjack, establishing an unusual, and illicit, foundation for the wearables to come.
The Father of Wearable Computing
The transition from niche cheating devices to general-purpose wearables began in earnest with one visionary: Steve Mann. Often called “the father of wearable computing,” Mann started building body-worn computers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His early creations were bulky, backpack-mounted systems connected to custom helmets and displays, a far cry from today's sleek watches. Mann's goal wasn't to beat the house, but to pioneer what he called “humanistic intelligence,” using technology to mediate and augment reality. He founded the MIT Media Lab's wearable computing project and his creations, like the Wearable Wireless Webcam from 1994, were foundational. Mann and other researchers at institutions like Columbia and Carnegie Mellon developed early head-mounted displays and augmented reality systems throughout the 90s, laying the academic and technical groundwork for the consumer devices that would follow.
From Labs to the Mainstream
The 2000s saw the first true consumer-focused wearables emerge. While still clunky by modern standards, devices like Bluetooth headsets normalized the idea of wearing technology on your head. At the same time, the fitness world was having its own revolution. Following early wrist-based heart rate monitors in the 1980s, the first modern fitness trackers began to appear. In 2007, a startup named Fitbit released its first product, a simple clip-on device that tracked steps, distance, and calories burned. Critically, it was designed to sync wirelessly with a computer or smartphone, making data tracking seamless and accessible for the average person. These early fitness trackers and communicators were single-purpose, but they successfully introduced the public to the idea that a small, always-on device could enhance daily life.
The Great Gadget Boom (and Bust)
The 2010s were a chaotic and defining decade for wearables. In 2012, a startup called Pebble launched a smartwatch on Kickstarter, hoping to raise $100,000. It raised over $10 million, proving massive public demand. Pebble's e-paper screen, long battery life, and smartphone notifications set the standard for what a smartwatch should do. Soon after, Google made a bold leap with Google Glass, an ambitious head-mounted display launched in 2013. Despite its futuristic promise, Glass failed commercially due to its high price, poor battery life, and significant privacy concerns that made wearers social pariahs. It was a high-profile failure that taught the industry valuable lessons about social acceptance. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch, launched in 2015, finally cracked the code, blending fitness tracking, communication, and a polished design into a device that became a mainstream success, solidifying the market that pioneers like Pebble had built.
