Not long ago, a retail chain's security perimeter was simple: the four walls of its stores and its central corporate office. The most critical devices, like Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals, were on a closed, internal network. The move to the cloud has shattered

Old Antivirus Can't Keep Up
Traditional antivirus software primarily works by identifying known threats, like a security guard with a list of known troublemakers. This approach is no longer sufficient. Modern cyberattacks, especially those targeting cloud-connected systems, are often sophisticated and designed to look like normal activity. This is where modern Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) comes in. EDR solutions act more like a full surveillance system, continuously monitoring endpoint behavior for suspicious patterns. Instead of just looking for known malware, EDR analyzes how programs are running and how data is moving. If a POS terminal suddenly tries to send a large file to an unknown server, EDR can flag and block that activity, even if no known virus is detected. This behavioral approach is crucial for spotting and stopping new and advanced threats before a breach occurs.

For a retail chain, a security failure at the endpoint is not just an IT problem; it's a direct threat to the business. A successful ransomware attack on POS systems could shut down stores, leading to immediate revenue loss and operational chaos.
