'Don't Want To Watch Any Videos': SC On Plea Against Delhi Police For Alleged Crackdown

Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday (July 22) refused an hearing of a petition seeking action against Delhi Police for allegedly beating students during the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest on Monday. A lawyer, Narendra Mishra, on Tuesday sent a letter petition to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant seeking action against Delhi Police. He had requested an urgent hearing of his petition.When the matter came up before a bench headed by the CJI, the petitioners' counsel told him that they also have video of the alleged attack, to which the Chief Justice replied, "Don't waste our time. We don't want to watch any videos."

What Mishra Said In The Petition:

Take suo motu judicial cognisance of the violation of fundamental rights, non-compliance with binding judgments of SC by the Delhi police during a peaceful public protest.Constitution of an independent judicial inquiry by a sitting bench of the Supreme, directions for registration of appropriate FIRS against the erring officials of the Delhi police, the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and other concerned authorities.

Protesters, Police Clash:

On Monday, protesters marched towards Parliament on the CJP's "Sansad Chalo" call, leading to clashes with Delhi Police. Protesters accused the security forces of using brutal force. However, the police rejected the claim."Some segments from media have mentioned sporadic use of violence/detentions at Jantar Mantar by Delhi Police. It is informed that no such incident has taken place and the protest is being handled professionally. All are requested not to fall pray to any rumour/ misgivings, and, to assist Delhi Police in maintaining peace and public order at and around the site," the police had said in a statement.After the alleged crackdown by the police, CJP protesters again gathered at Jantar Mantar through the night despite heavy rain and tight security. Several videos of the alleged assault also surfaced online.
